SUVs Dominate the List of Most American-Made Vehicles for 2022
Each year, the Kogod School of Business puts out a top 10 list of automobiles containing the most U.S. domestic material. On the Made in America Auto Index, SUVs were the most prevalent on the list of the most American-made vehicles in 2022. That makes sense, given the fact that Americans love sport utility vehicles.
The people want American-made sport utility vehicles
The top 10 Kogod 2022 Made in America Auto Index contains 24 vehicles since many received the same score. Of those 24 options, 15 are SUVs. The Lincoln Corsair SUV in the gas or plug-in hybrid version came in first with 72% U.S./Canadian content. Lincoln builds this SUV at the Louisville Assembly Plant in Louisville, Kentucky.
Jeep had the most options on the list, from the Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Grand Cherokee L. The automaker builds these at the Stellantis factory in Detroit, Michigan.

How is the most American-made vehicle decided?
There were a lot of changes this year in how automakers sourced parts. Domestic manufacturers held strong but have been sourcing supplies from Mexico, which dropped the U.S./Canadian content. How does this study determine that? Kogod uses seven criteria to determine which vehicles have the most content from the U.S. and Canada.
Those seven criteria are profit margin, labor, research and development (R&D), inventory/capital, engine, transmission, and body/chassis/electrical components. Each car, truck, and SUV gets or removes points based on its U.S. parts and assembly.
Last year, the Ford Mustang was in first place overall with the most domestic content. For 2022, Ford switched from an engine produced in the U.S. to one built in Mexico. That change lost 14 points on the Made in America Auto Index.
There was a significant shift in U.S. content for some brands
Ford had fewer parts from the U.S. this year, dropping from a 65 score to 60.5 as a brand. Stellantis dropped from a score of 60 to 52, and G.M. decreased from 66 to 60. On the flip side, Volkswagen, Toyota, Hyundai/Kia, Nissan, and Honda increased domestic content.
Supply chain issues and semiconductor chip shortages have significantly impacted vehicle production worldwide. Given those complications, it makes sense that there would be a lot of change between 2021 and 2022.
