Taco Tuesday: Is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma Still Worth Buying?
The 2021 Toyota Tacoma has made waves. Its upgraded TRD Pro model with the Lunar Rock paint color is an icon in a lineup of tough midsize pickup trucks. But now that the 2021 Taco is here and the 2022 model looms on the horizon is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma still worth buying?
Considering this truck’s slow rate of depreciation, it’s doubtful that the 2020 Toyota Tacoma costs much less than the 2021 model year. Still, some people may go back to the 2020 Taco to save a few bucks––even if it is only an actual few. But let’s look a little deeper into the 2020 model and the 2021 Tacoma. What is different about them?
2020 vs. 2021 Toyota Tacoma models
While the 2020 Toyota Tacoma model isn’t besting the 2021 model year, it’s really not that far behind. In fact, it’s not that different at all. The price isn’t even different. Well, according to U.S. News and World Report the 2020 Taco is technically $100 less. The MSRP range for a 2020 Toyota Tacoma is $26,050 – $46,665.
The current model has an MSRP range of $26,150 – $46,780. That means that the 2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro in Lunar Rock is roughly the same price as a 2020 model. The only real difference is that the 2020 TRD Pro Tacoma was the last year that kept the snorkel. Plus, the 2021 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro boasts its exclusive color. Other than that, the new Trail models and a Nightshade Special Edition package join the lineup and that sums up the differences between the two model years.
The 2021 Trail models
The 2021 Toyota Tacoma gained a Trail Edition model as well as the Nightshade package. The Trail models are available in Cement, Army Green, Midnight Black Metallic, and Super White. Black badging pairs with a black interior with tan contrast stitching.
One of the best features of the 2021 Trail model Tacoma is the fact that it comes standard with all-weather floor mats. The 2021 Toyota Tacoma Trail specifically features 16-inch TRD Off-Road wheels in the Dark Gray color. These wheels are wrapped in Kevlar All-Terrain tires. Plus, the Trail model also features the grille from the Limited trim Taco.
Because this model is geared toward drivers with a passion for outdoor recreation, the composite pickup bed features a 115-volt power outlet. Toyota reports that this allows for some extra versatility on the fly. There’s also insulated lockable bed storage that doubles as a cooler.
Is the 2020 Toyota Tacoma still worth buying?
The 2020 Toyota Tacoma is still a great truck. In 2019, the Tacoma saw virtually no changes. In 2020, however, Toyota ramped up the model with a comprehensive standard safety package.
The tech is updated, the safety is better, and it’s still the same reliable little truck with the capability for major off-pavement exploration. The 2020 Toyota Tacoma is definitely still worth buying. If you like the snorkel and don’t mind missing out on the Lunar Rock TRD Pro color, then you aren’t likely to regret going with a 2020 model instead of the 2021 Toyota midsizer.
