baja
The Subaru Baja was a compact pickup truck model produced and sold by the automobile manufacturing division of the Subaru Corporation. It was a successor to the Subaru BRAT coupe utility vehicle.
The Subaru Baja was named after Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, where the infamous Baja 1000 off-road motorsport race is held. This inspiration carried over to the design, with the body of the Baja modeled after rally-race trucks. Primarily, the Baja drew inspiration from Subaru’s ST-X (Sport Truck X-perimental) concept vehicle that debuted at the 2000 Los Angeles International Auto Show.
The Subaru Baja received positive press and reviews after its debut in 2002. However, its niche build kept the pickup truck from selling well, and the Subaru Baja was discontinued in early 2006.
While arguably in a class of its own, the Subaru Baja’s competition during its time included the GEO and Chevy Tracker, the Suzuki X-90, the Honda Ridgeline, and the Toyota Tacoma. More modern rivals would consist of the Chevy Montana, the Ford Maverick, and the Hyundai Santa Cruz.
