The Ferrari F40 was a performance sports car model produced and sold by the Italian luxury sports car automaker Ferrari S.p.A. The F40 succeeded the Ferrari 288 GTO discontinued in 1987 and was followed by the Ferrari F50, which debuted in 1995.
The Ferrari F40 is a landmark of the brand’s history. Designed by Nicola Materazzi (who also was behind the Ferrari 288 GTO and the Bugatti EB110), the Ferrari F40 was released in 1987 to celebrate the company’s 40th anniversary. It was Ferrari’s fastest, most powerful, and most expensive model sold at the time. Additionally, the F40 was the last car that involved the approval and assistance of founder Enzo Ferrari before his death in 1988.
With a plan for only 400 units, the immense popularity of the Ferrari F40 caused it to balloon to a production run of 1,315 units, with only 215 units shipped to the United States. Additionally, the F40 model was heavily involved in racing with its LM and Competizione variants. As a rarity of the time, one of the only competitors to this expensive supercar was the Porsche 959.
