The Mercedes-Benz GLE is a luxury midsize SUV model produced and sold by Mercedes-Benz, a subsidiary of the Daimler AG multinational automotive corporation. Within the Mercedes-Benz vehicle catalog of SUV models, the GLE is sized and priced above the Mercedes-Benz GLC luxury compact SUV and below the Mercedes-Benz GLS luxury full-size SUV.
The first generation of the GLE was released in 1997 under DaimlerChrysler and was called the Mercedes-Benz M-Class. However, due to pressure from BMW, which produced its own line of M models (for motorsport), M-Class models were sold with ML badging and naming conventions, leading to some confusion among its audience. Much later, during the vehicle’s third generation in 2015, Mercedes-Benz abandoned the M-Class name, adopting the GLE nameplate under a new brand nomenclature structure, making it easier to categorize models.
Now in its fourth generation, which debuted at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, competitors of the GLE midsize luxury SUV include the Audi Q7, the BMW X5, the Lexus RX, and the Volvo XC90.
