Humvee
The AM General Humvee (High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle/HMMWV) is a four-wheel-drive light military truck produced and sold by the heavy vehicle contract automaker AM General. In service by the U.S. military for nearly 30 years, the Humvee was the direct inspiration and foundation for the Hummer H1, a street-legal version of the Humvee that drivers could buy and drive.
A successor of sorts to the Willys MB Jeeps (which were used as inspiration for the Jeep Wrangler and other off-road SUVs), the AM General Humvee was first designed as a prototype in a contest to win a military truck contract. After the prototype won and was awarded the contract, AM General produced its first batch of Humvees in 1983, followed by many additional production runs over the years. Humvees are still produced and used by the U.S. military to this day and are expected to remain in production until 2050.
