lada
Lada is a Russian automotive manufacturing division of AvtoVAZ, which is in turn owned by the French multinational Renault Group. The brand is best known to those in the post-Soviet Union landscape as a producer of small, affordable, and good-value cars.
AvtoVAZ was formed as a collaboration between Fiat and the Department of Foreign Trade when the country was still the Soviet Union in 1966. The Lada brand (named for a type of small boat in Slavic) was established in 1973 and became the dedicated brand for export markets, while also being designed to be easy to fix for local buyers (due to a lack of auto repair business in the Soviet Union). These moves led Lada to receive a negative reputation for producing cheap cars from some consumers, but a positive reputation for solid and reliable vehicles from others.
In addition to passenger vehicles, Lada models have often been repurposed as civilian defense and public service vehicles by local and national businesses and government bodies, including their use as ambulances, police cars, and taxis.
