model y
The Tesla Model Y is a compact electric luxury SUV model produced and sold by Tesla (formerly Tesla Motors Inc.). The Model Y is the newest production model released and sold by the company (until the Cybertruck, new Roadster, or Semi release) and is sized and priced below the Tesla Model X midsize electric luxury SUV.
Tesla trademarked the name “Model Y” back in 2013, design concepts of the vehicle were shown to the public in 2015, and a finalized Tesla Model Y production version was revealed in 2019 at the company’s design studio in Hawthrone, California. Pitched and designed as a Tesla Model 3-based SUV, the first deliveries of the Model Y occurred over a year later in 2020.
The Tesla Model Y was initially released in Standard Range, Long Range, and Performance trim levels, along with available all-wheel drive (AWD). However, rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configurations have since been discontinued, making AWD standard but increasing the vehicle’s baseline price. Rivals to the Model Y compact EV SUV include the Chevy Bolt EV and EUV, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the Hyundai Kona Electric, the Kia Niro EV, the Volkswagen ID.4, and the Volvo XC40.
About Tesla
- 2022 Tesla Model Y (Starting MSRP $60,190)
- Pros: The Tesla Model Y electric luxury compact SUV provides plenty of power and responsive acceleration in a more spacious and practical build than the Model 3 and Model S sedans.
- Cons: The ride quality of the Model Y isn’t as solid as Tesla’s sedans, its fit-and-finish exterior quality has consistent problems upon delivery, and its touchscreen is used for too many simple vehicle features that could be easily implemented elsewhere.
