The Scion FR-S was a coupe sports car model produced and sold by Scion, a youth-oriented vehicle division of the Toyota Motor Corporation.
The origin of the Scion FR-S starts with the Toyota FT-HS (Future Toyota-Hybrid Sport) concept vehicle that was introduced at the 2007 North American International Auto Show. After its debut, Toyota invited Subaru to help develop the project further, which led to several additional concept cars over the years before a production version of the Toyota 86 was revealed at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show. Later, Subaru would name its rebranded version of the 86 the Subaru BRZ.
Due to its sharp style, Toyota decided to sell the 86 out of its youth-oriented Scion brand in North America. This led to the Scion FR-S nameplate in 2012. When the Scion division closed in 2016, the model was rebranded back into the Toyota vehicle lineup for North American sales. Beyond its duplicates from Toyota and Subaru, other rivals of the Scion FR-S included the Chevrolet Camaro, the Ford Mustang, the Mazda MX-5 Miata, and the Nissan 370Z.
