Teens Got Away With $1 Million Worth of Jeep Grand Wagoneers
It seems like teenagers are getting smarter about stealing cars. They’ve gone from targeting random Kia models to pulling off well-planned heists. A group of teens even got away with $1 million worth of Jeep Grand Wagoneer models.
Teens steal 10 Jeep Grand Wagoneer models
Teens were involved in a well-planned heist in the middle of the night at the Warren Stamping Plant in Detroit, Michigan.
Reportedly, every teenager involved was under the age of 18, meaning they only get a very light slap on the wrist for vehicular theft.
They used a Ram 1500 to bust through the fence of a storage lot around 3 AM on Monday, the 22. Then they hopped into $1 million worth of Jeep Grand Wagoneer models and drove off.
Police officers were only able to recover four of the SUVs, meaning that six are still at large. Each model starts at about $93,000, making it an expensive target. They could be sold for profit or stripped for parts.
The teenagers could be connected to a larger crime ring in Southeast Michigan. Later in the week, 10 Ford F-150 Raptor trucks were stolen from another storage lot nearby. They used a stolen Kia to drive through the fence. Six out of 10 stolen trucks were recovered.
Lieutenant John Gajewski, Warren Police, shared that they often discover during investigations that suspects involved in thefts of motor vehicles are involved with other crimes from additional theft, business break-ins, or robberies.
Gajewski explained that the primary goal is prevention. They don’t want any crimes and in these particular cases, the groups involved are fairly organized. They work with Chrysler security, state, and local partners to identify the root cause.
The security footage of the storage lot wasn’t shared. Semi-trucks were also placed in front of the hole in the fence to block it.
If you saw any Jeep Grand Wagoneer models in the area during the early morning hours on Monday, please contact the Warren Police at 586-574-4700.
