While Elon Musk is putzing around on social media sharing memes, the Tesla Cybertruck is slowly fading into obsolescence before it even hits the market. Ford announced its Ford F-150 Lightning electric truck around the same time, but these are sitting in customer driveways already. While the design isn’t quite as complex, will Tesla release the Cybertruck before 2023 is over?

How long is the wait for Tesla Cybertruck?

How many electric trucks are on the market or almost heading to market right now? The Ford F-150 Lightning started deliveries to buyers this month. People have spotted GMC Hummer EV Pickup deliveries around Michigan. Buyers are driving Rivian R1T trucks around the country already.

But the Tesla Cybertruck was stealing the spotlight before any of these other electric trucks were even announced. Starting with the demonstration where Musk smashed an unbreakable window on stage, the Cybertruck has been a favorite topic on the internet.

But now it’s more than two years later, and Tesla seems to have a Cybertruck or two that it totes around for publicity stunts. Automotive News says Musk recently confirmed that the Tesla Cybertruck production was going smoothly. However, the Tesla Cybertruck release date has already been delayed a few times. First into 2022 and now into 2023. At one point, dates were removed from the website entirely, along with pricing.

The Tesla Cybertruck might hit the market by the end of 2023

The only electric truck the Cybertruck is anticipated to beat to market right now is the electric Chevy Silverado pickup, which was only announced at the start of 2022. The Silverado EV is much more traditional looking than the Cybertruck, but even it has gone through more of the production cycle than the Cybertruck.

Automotive News says that AutoForecast Solutions doesn’t anticipate seeing the Tesla Cybertruck until the fourth quarter of 2023. The Silverado is set for a spring debut, and the barely-announced GMC Sierra EV truck is slated for fall. The Tesla truck might beat Stellantis to the punch if it can get things together quickly. The Ram 1500 EV truck should be out around the same time, plus another Ford truck.

But the cogs are moving somewhere within Tesla. The Cybertruck showed up at a conference last week and previously at another event in May. Robby DeGraff, industry analyst at AutoPacific, says that a recent photo of a production-type Cybertruck has emerged. The IDRA Group shared a picture of the Giga Press used for the truck on Twitter earlier this month. Musk confirmed this piece of machinery was for the Tesla Cybertruck.

There are rumored to be more than one million reservations

Even die-hard Tesla fans are probably getting tired of waiting. Does the Cybertruck really offer much that another electric truck cannot? Besides the adoration from strangers, not really. One of the first Ford F-150 Lightning deliveries went to someone who canceled a Cybertruck order. A fan-made reservation tracker shows more than one million reservations for the truck, which means Tesla will probably sell plenty when it hits the market.

The hype will probably start up again when the Tesla Cybertruck gets closer to deliveries. Musk will probably pretend this was his plan the whole time. Just be sure to check the body panels for gapping before taking delivery, if you make it that far.
