It’s official, you can give your Tesla Cybertruck model extra range. However, the Tesla Cybertruck range extender costs $16,000 and takes up a significant portion of the bed. Going further sacrifices practicality.

The Tesla Cybertruck range extender finally made its debut with the ability to add about 130 miles of range per charge.

The tri-motor model has 340 miles of range, but with the range extender, it can travel up to about 470 miles between charges.

This is only 30 miles short of the 500 model range that Elon Musk promised the Cybertruck would deliver. But adding that 130 miles of range cost $16,000.

Elon Musk promised that the Cybertruck would start at $40,000, but the entry-level variant begins at $60,990 with 250 miles of range and was recently dropped.

The AWD variant starts at $79,990 and the Cyberbeast starts at $99,000, so forget Tesla’s goal to build something affordable.

The range extender has to be installed by Tesla and that costs $1,000. This could be due to its weight, but Tesla hasn’t revealed how heavy it is.

Also, if it has to be installed at a Tesla service center, then it probably isn’t easy to remove if you need extra cargo space.

While Drew Baglino, Tesla SVP of Powertrain and Engineering shared that the range extender is a toolbox-sized battery that sits behind the cab, it takes up 33% of the bed.

Elon Musk shared with drivers that there’s still room for plenty of cargo. Plus, it’s meant for very long trips or towing heavy things up mountains. You may need a trailer to carry your stuff if you opt for the available range extender.

You can preorder the Tesla Cybertruck range extender right now and installations are expected to begin in 2025. I can’t wait for it to be put to the test.
