Tesla Cybertruck Quad-Motor Option is Coming, Says Elon Musk
Elon Musk took to Twitter to reveal previously undisclosed information about a Quad-Motor option for the Tesla Cybertruck. Since its initial reveal, the Cybertruck had a single, dual, or tri-motor variant. Even when preordering the electric truck online, a quad-motor option did not exist. While it’s normal for automakers to make massive announcements with videos or live streams, this way was more leisurely.
Elon Musk revealed the Tesla Cybertruck quad-motor via Twitter
A Twitter user offered a rumor that the single-motor Cybertruck was going away. The same user then said it was in favor of using only a dual, tri, and quad motor option. This tweet was enough to get Elon Musk to respond because he wasn’t tagged in the original post. His response reads, “Initial production will be 4 motor variant, with independent, ultra-fast response torque control of each wheel.”
Initial production? Meaning not only is a quad-motor variant a real thing, but it will be the first version of the Cybertruck to enter production? It seems like a strange way of going about things, but the automaker should have plenty of time with all the delays. It also means the tri-motor, which comes in at $69,900, will be the second most costly model, and the quad-motor will be very expensive.
How much will a Tesla Cybertruck quad-motor cost?
The official price point for the quad-motor variant is still unknown. We can assume that it will be more than the tri-motor and similarly priced to the Hummer EV quad-motor model. The GM competitor costs upwards of $100,000 and offers 1,000 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque. Could the Hummer EV be the reason for the quad-motor addition?
Is the Hummer EV the reason for the many Cybertruck production delays on the same wavelength? Since the announcements of the many Hummer EV features, the Cybertruck received multiple delays. Not to mention, Elon Musk answered another Twitter user in the same thread about adding a “crab-walking” feature exactly like the Hummer.
Tesla delayed the Cybertruck because of the Hummer EV and Rivian R1T
The Hummer EV will release having tons of power, excellent features, and loads more. The good thing about competition is it forces other companies to step up their game. Elon Musk and Tesla previously stated that a quad-motor system for the Tesla Cybertruck was unnecessary, according to MotorTrend. For the automaker to instantly flip its switch seems a bit odd.
The only explanation is the competition with the Hummer EV and Rivian R1T electric trucks. Both of these vehicles announced powerful motor setups and a similar diagonal-walking mode. The result was a bunch of Cybertruck delays and now the new features announced on Twitter. Musk mentioned that Tesla would discuss the quad motor and other new items during the next earnings call.
When will the electric truck be available?
The reasons for the many Cybertruck delays remain unconfirmed, but these new features are likely a factor. Earlier in 2021, Elon Musk said that deliveries could begin by the end of the year with a bit of luck. Unfortunately, in August, the Cybertruck configurator informed customers that production would not start until sometime in 2022. Musk had also told reporters that Tesla finished engineering back in January, proven untrue.
The electric truck was announced a few years ago with virtually zero competition. Since then, Other automakers have revealed the Ford F-150 Lightning, Rivian R1T, and Hummer EV electric pickup trucks. With all the healthy competition in the market, the Tesla Cybertruck is forced to make changes for the better. As always, with market competition, the consumer will benefit most. We will continue to get improved electric truck variants until each automaker is satisfied.
