The Tesla Cybertruck is one of the most captivating cars of the past few decades. Regardless of how anyone feels about Tesla’s CEO or the polarizing design of the brand’s first electric truck, the Cybertruck is objectively magnetic. We can’t help but wonder, speculate, and even dream about what it could do for the truck world. Once you deal with those questions, you also have to deal with the “what ifs,” of which many surround the Cybertruck. Of all the unknowns, one thing is for certain: the Tesla Cybertruck waitlist is going to stretch for years.
How long is the Tesla Cybertruck waitlist?
A crowd-sourced data tracking app indicates that there are approximately 1.9 million Tesla Cybertruck orders. That is a massive number before you consider the last few years’ production delays and increased demand. Assuming Tesla can hit its planned production schedule of 375,000 units per year, that would mean getting through the 1.9 million orders would take a little more than five years.
This timeline is only an estimation. As you can imagine, many order holders are likely to pass on their spot, and many new customers will also join the fray. For those reasons, this window could shift dramatically in either direction. To make matters even more complicated, we are talking about the Tesla Cybertruck. This has been one of the most opaque and confusing car launches in history. Keep in mind that it debuted in 2019. Now, nearly five years later, we have only seen one production unit, and even it seemed to have an issue with the doors. The point is that we can estimate all we want, but the Tesla Cybertruck feels more akin to the rapture than it does a car launch.
Will the Cybertruck be sold outside of the U.S.?
InsideEVs mentions that Tesla has not announced the Cybertruck for any other market. That said, in the European and Asian markets, the Tesla Cybertruck is available for preorder, but it’s hard to believe that it will be allowed in those places due to its immense size. According to the laws of multiple European countries, the Tesla’s size and weight make it a commercial vehicle.
What features will the Tesla Cybertruck have?
At a recent Tesla earnings call, Elon Musk, yet again, wrote a bunch of checks on the Cybertruck’s back without providing any details or elaborating on the actual features of the Cybertruck.
“I do want to emphasize that the Cybertruck has a lot of new technology in it, like a lot. It doesn’t look like — it doesn’t look like any other vehicle because it is not like any other vehicle.”
Supposedly, the Tesla Cybertruck will debut with a 350-range. Even this one detail is confusing because in 2019 when the truck was first revealed, its top-of-the-line quadmotor version was promised to have a 620 range. Of course, today, multiple inside sources say that spec is unlikely to make it to production, at least for the foreseeable future.
It’s hard to know if all the confusion and mixed messaging is a marketing play or a result of over-promising products that Tesla can’t deliver. I guess once customers start getting a real truck in their driveways, we’ll find out what’s what.
