Tesla has made impressive progress in 2020, pandemic, and all. The electric vehicle company has achieved record-breaking sales this year, and its stock prices have skyrocketed. Tesla says we can expect more innovative products coming down the pipe. But some experts think this carmaker is too ambitious. 

CEO Elon Musk’s expansion goals 

Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, is somewhat of an enigma. There’s no denying that Musk has transformed the EV industry, inspiring other companies to compete in this arena. But at the same time, it’s hard to know what to make of Musk. 

Musk says that future Tesla innovations could include a compact car, or even a minivan. But as AutoNews highlights, Tesla has a history of blowing deadlines and having product launch issues. 

The much-anticipated Cybertruck is an example of this. More often than not, Tesla’s project plans are communicated through Musk’s personal Twitter, without set timelines. 

Tesla’s vague project strategies have made some experts question how the company will evolve. The company’s self-driving car technology is another reason to be skeptical about the company’s long-term goals. Even so, Tesla’s sales figures don’t lie. Tesla is now one of the most valuable companies in the world. And even though its plans are obscure, Tesla has allured many Wall Street investors. 

The Tesla maybes

One of the biggest Tesla maybes is its Roadster concept. Three years ago, the EV maker announced its $200,000 Roadster that was supposed to launch by the end of this year. However, Musk said that projects like the new Berlin Gigafactory and production of the Cybertruck took precedent. 

AutoNews says that the Roadster isn’t likely till 2022 at the earliest. In a podcast, Musk explained that the Roadster is basically “dessert,” and Tesla has to “get the meat and potatoes and greens and stuff.” Other potential Tesla products include a compact car that costs $25K, but we shouldn’t expect it for at least three more years. And regarding the minivan, Musk mostly wants to make one for looks. The minivan concept isn’t likely to happen before the Cybertruck takes off.

About the Cybertruck: it’s supposed to go on sale by the end of 2021 officially. Musk says that this electrified pickup will be “helpful in the apocalypse.” The Cybertruck boasts an incredibly unique design and will compete with the likes of the Ford F-150 EV. However, Musk says that the Cybertruck might turn out to be a normal truck.

Tesla’s best-sellers 

While some projects are still up in the air, Tesla’s existing models have earned acclaim. The company’s Model S is credited as the first EV to achieve a 400-mile electric range. The Plaid variant is supposed to launch in 2021. 

Tesla’s Model 3 has also made an enormous splash in the EV market. The Model 3 is the cheapest Tesla and was technically the top-selling luxury car in the U.S. in the first quarter of this year. Additionally, the carmaker’s Model Y crossover persists as one of Tesla’s most innovative products.
