Why Was the Tesla Model 3 Almost Called the Model E?
Vehicle designs are rapidly advancing as time goes by, and electric vehicles are the newest cars to join the automotive industry. Owning an EV nowadays isn’t as unusual as it was a few years ago since many people already own them. The number one electric car brand in the world is Tesla, and it has a variety of models.
Tesla’s current line-up consists of four models: the 3, S, Y, and X. These models are not only environmentally friendly, but they also offer higher torques than other EVs. Most of these models are identified by individual letters, apart from the Model 3. So, why is the Model 3 the only one with a number? That’s because its original nameplate was E.
What inspired the names of the Tesla models?
Elon Musk has been making considerable progress on the Tesla brand since he became the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in October 2008. According to CyberBackpack, he once made a joke about owning the SEXY car company, and believe it or not, this joke made by Musk is the motivation behind the vehicles’ names.
When the names of models 3, S, X, and Y are arranged in a particular order, it is realized that they spell out ‘S3XY’. However, the idea of naming the models in this pattern was on point since no one can effectively put batteries on wheels as Tesla does. The SEXY cars may be all-electric, but they pack a huge amount of horsepower, which is impressive for a vehicle powered by batteries. These cars also bridge the gap between conserving the environment and having a long and fast ride.
However, if a lineup of SEXY cars was the plan, why isn’t there a Tesla Model E?
Ford is the reason why there isn’t a Tesla Model E
In 2010, Ford and Tesla signed a deal restricting Tesla from using the name ‘Model E,’ reserving it for Ford electric vehicles. However, in Musk’s vision of owning the ‘SEXY’ car company, he still went on and registered the Model E in 2014. This sparked legal intervention from Ford’s side since the name ‘Model E’ was Ford’s to own from the beginning, and hence, Tesla had to rename the Model E. However, this didn’t change much since Musk merely mirrored the ‘E’ in the name and renamed it Model 3′, reinforcing his dream of owning the S3XY car company.
When it first debuted, the Model 3’s logo was three horizontal bars piled up on each other (☰). Musk, the co-founder, had to change this logo for two major reasons: First, there were still claims that the bars resembled the ‘E’ name. Also, the three bars are difficult for consumers to type into the search bars, so Tesla had to change the logo to Arabic numerals, which it is currently using.
EVs made by Tesla are unique
Tesla made its first EV debut in 2008 with the Roadster, and it was the first legally-approved electric vehicle to use lithium-ion batteries. During this time when EVs were still uncommon, the Roadster reached a unique milestone by running 200 miles on a single charge. Currently, 200 miles seems minimal, but the Roadster’s success is the foundation of Tesla’s progressive success in the electric car market.
Electrek reveals that a second-generation Roadster will be released soon, which is ideally just an upgrade from the first. Instead of just going for 200 miles, this Roadster will allegedly be able to go for 620 miles on a single charge, and it will be able to go from 0 to 60 mph in just 1.9 seconds. Tesla is also working on the Cybertruck, an electric pickup truck that reportedly features a 500+ mile range on a full charge and a 14,000-pound towing capacity. If these claims hold, it will undoubtedly be a game changer in the market.
