The Tesla Model Y is no stranger to price fluctuations. The electric vehicle automaker has had issues keeping pricing consistent. As a result, competitors with stable prices have moved in to occupy more of the new electric vehicle market share.

According to InsideEVs, the Tesla Model Y Long Range now costs an extra $1,000 due to nickel prices. The base model was once $39,990. Today, the Model Y is only available in Long Range, and Performance trims on the website. The Long Range starts at $55,690. The Performance model starts at $60,690.

The electric SUV was once one of the most affordable Tesla models ever created. The Model 3 and Model Y signaled a huge shift for the brand after the creation of several expensive luxury models. Unfortunately, the Model Y is getting further and further out of reach for the average American consumer. Even after electric vehicle tax incentives, the Model Y Long Range’s price is still more expensive than the price of the average new SUV.

Tesla has become a household name because of the brand’s many modern innovations. The automaker equips vehicles with everything from Dog Mode to Bioweapon Defense Mode.

The Tesla Model Y was once king of the hill

The Model Y was once one of the two most popular electric vehicles on the market alongside the Tesla Model 3. Today, the Volkswagen ID.4 is dominating electric vehicle sales in Europe. There are several new Model Y rivals in the American market with even more on the way.

The Model Y was popular because of its practicality and range, but price fluctuations and supply chain issues have made the electric SUV less accessible to consumers. The SUV that was once thought to be the electric vehicle of the future is slowly fading into the background. Once at the forefront, will the Model Y ever be as impactful to the industry as it once was with its new high prices?
