If you think you see a lot of white Tesla Model Y EVs around town, there’s a reason for this. “Pearl White” has historically been the automaker’s default exterior color. In other words, for many Tesla shoppers, the shade was “free with purchase.”

This isn’t the case today; Tesla’s Model Y build page now includes “Stealth Grey” for no additional charge and lists Pearl White for an extra grand. Perhaps the automaker is intentionally attempting to change up the color mix out here. But what do owners actually think of Pearl White? I found an enlightening 2024 Reddit post with dozens of Model Y drivers discussing the color, so I pulled the pros and cons mentioned from it.

Pros and cons of choosing Tesla’s Pearl White Multi-Coat

Pearl White prosPearl White cons
It’s often “free” (Tesla’s default color)Extremely common
Many say it’s beautiful and “futuristic” in personDirt and dead bug “magnet”
Stays cooler in hot weatherRock chips and other marks show as black dots
“Fun” and “satisfying” to washSome panel colors might be a slightly different shade of white

For the most part, Pearl White Model Y owners love the shade…despite its disadvantages. Many like that it reflects the sun and say they find frequent cleaning – even hand-washing – part of the “joy” of EV ownership.

For owners who loved the white exterior option but didn’t want to blend into the mass of “Startroopers,” customizing seems a good option. Some owners wrapped part of or the entire EV. Others customized the side mirrors and wheels, for instance.

White Model Y owners, any regrets?

The most serious grievances involved rock chips and road debris causing black dots that don’t go away with cleaning. Other Model Y owners mentioned that the plastic bumper cover colors might not exactly match the Pearl White-painted metal panels, either.
