The Tesla Cybertruck. Three years and nothing to show for it. Tesla, more specifically, Elon Musk, continually promises grandiose features that don’t exist, a futuristic tomorrow that is still decades away or maybe not possible at all, and now, an electric truck that we may never get. The Tesla website unceremoniously removed the production estimates for the Tesla Cybertruck, worsening the worry that the Cybertruck is further delayed. 

When is the Tesla Cybertruck coming out? 

Only a few months back, Elon Musk said that the slight delay of the Tesla Cybertruck would have the truck hitting customer driveways in early 2022. This now feels unlikely. The problem with Tesla and Elon Musk is that it can often be hard to parse out whether something like this is a true shuffle in the dark to hide mistakes and setbacks or if Musky is giving us the old sandbag. 

As mentioned by InsideEVs, Tesla doesn’t have a PR agency or marketing department. Most information about the company comes from Elon Musk himself via Twitter. Since Elon Musk tends only to share his fanciful ideas or positive new possibilities, we typically have to rely on sneaky internet spies to actually learn anything about the state of Tesla.

Is the Cybertruck delayed again? 

That said, Tesla made some changes to the Cybertruck order page. Just a few weeks ago, the Tesla website mentioned that Cybertruck reservation holders will be able to complete their order when “production nears in 2022.” According to InsideEVs, it now simply says “as production nears.” 

Could this be as simple as 2021 is over, and 2022 has arrived, so there’s no need to have 2022 in the statemen? As with most Tesla-related questions, who knows? 

To make matters worse, or at least more confusing, this small change comes after Tesla previously removed order specs and pricing. Tesla also removed the single motor option as well. What does all this shuffling and seemingly broken promises mean for the Cybertruck? Musk said that he would share more details after the 2021 Q4 earnings call. 

What’s going on with the Tesla Gigafactory in Austin, Texas? 

Rumors are swirling, suggesting that Elon Musk might be making a major announcement about the Austin, Texas Gigafactory this week. The plan, as far as we know it, for this factory is to start with the Tesla Model Y production then move to build Tesla Cybertrucks. This plant is set to open soon, so maybe there’s hope for the Cybertruck yet. 

As with all Tesla questions, we really don’t know why the site quietly removed the Cybertruck information. There is no money in trying to predict what Elon Musk or Tesla will do next, but Elon does have a history of sandbagging, as InsideEVs points out. Remember, the Tesla Model Y came out ahead of schedule.

Granted, that was before a pandemic, multiple supply chain issues, and serious shipping delays across the globe. There really is just no telling. On the one hand, Tesla is reporting record profits and booming popularity. Maybe the electric car maker is just gearing up for a big reveal. Only time – or Elon Musk’s Twitter – will tell.
