Tesla EVs boast cutting-edge electric powertrains delivering instant torque and impressive acceleration. The company’s Model S sports sedan, Model 3 compact sedan, Model X midsize crossover SUV, and Model Y small crossover SUV are acclaimed for their performance, efficiency, and safety features. Interestingly, Tesla’s 2023 cars earned virtually identical scores across the lineup. Let’s look at the numbers.

8 Tesla models received essentially the same score

Edmunds tests 200 vehicles a year on its track and drives them on 115-mile real-world test loops of city streets, freeways, and winding canyons. The results are based on 30-plus scores that cover performance, comfort, interior, technology, utility, and value.

Beginning with the 2023 Tesla Model Y, Edmunds gave this SUV an 8.1 out of 10. The upgraded Model Y Performance and Model Y Long Range also received an 8.1. So did the Model S, Model 3 Performance, and Model X. 

The 2023 Tesla Model 3 and the 2022 Model 3 Long Range got slightly lower scores of 8.0.

Common pros and cons of Tesla models

Among the most common Tesla drawbacks is the touchscreen-focused control interface, which can lead to driver distraction. Also, Tesla has its own operating system, so its EVs lack Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. In addition, the company doesn’t offer a less expensive base model. 

The most notable Tesla EV benefits are impressive range, fast acceleration (especially in the Performance models), roomy interiors, and a convenient Supercharger network for long-distance driving.

Despite complaints, Tesla’s consistency is impressive

Tesla models are consistent across the board despite complaints such as less-than-advertised range and cumbersome tech. With scores only varying by 0.1 in Edmunds’ ratings, Tesla has a formula it rarely strays from, and it pays off.

That could be a blessing or a curse. If one feature is changed and doesn’t perform as it should, it would bring down ratings across the board. On the other hand, if Tesla incorporates new features that improve one model, it will carry it over to the other models. 

Tesla is a pioneer in the EV world and remains a leader in the segment. However, facing pressure from other manufacturers offering more electric vehicles, Tesla must continue innovating to stay relevant. Ford, Chevrolet, and virtually every other car manufacturer are nipping at Tesla’s heels. So what’s next for Elon Musk’s EV maker?

After countless delays, Tesla’s highly anticipated Cybertruck is expected to begin production in 2023. The truck has an estimated 1.5 million pre-orders as of November 2022, which have likely only increased. However, Tesla is asking for only a $100 deposit, so many of those pre-orders might not result in purchases.
