Tested: 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone, Not Your Grandfather’s Truck
Towing, hauling, and general pickup stuff, the 2022 Toyota Tundra can do just about everything you would expect a full-size truck to do. But recently, I got the chance to test out a Tundra that takes things to the next level, the 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone. And, it needs to be said, with a sticker price of over $75,000, this is not your average pickup truck. It is a luxury truck.
What is special about the Tundra Capstone?
As the top-of-the-line version of Toyota’s big truck, the Tundra Capstone is special. It comes with air springs, plenty of chrome, and a 14.0-inch touchscreen. And with this behemoth of a Toyota truck, that large screen certainly comes in handy.
In the past, trucks were just simple tools. They were not where brands chose to flex the latest and greatest features, but the 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone shows just how much things have changed.
A 12.3 digital gauge cluster displays all the important information that you need to know about your full-size truck, while acoustic glass keeps you isolated from those who didn’t spend $75,000 on their pickup truck.
The 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone is still ready for truck stuff
Despite coming with heated and cooled front seats, if you need a capable luxury truck, the Tundra Capstone is just that. According to Car and Driver, it comes with the 3.4-liter V6 iForce MAX hybrid engine that makes 437 horsepower and 583 pound-foot of torque. And although it only has six cylinders, you could be easily fooled into thinking the Tundra still has a V8.
In terms of towing, the top-trim Tundra can handle up to 10,340 lbs. It can also haul up to 1,485 lbs. That might not be as much as other Tundra models, but the Capstone does have some tricks up its sleeve. Adaptive dampers and a new rear air spring suspension system come standard. The rear air springs allow you to raise and lower the bed as needed, which is extremely convenient on a truck of this size.
Another piece of helpful equipment is the camera system. Navigating a full-size truck can feel like a bit of a chore in the city. But the many camera angles offered by the Tundra Capstone can make even a novice truck driver feel confident.
Final thoughts on the ultimate Toyota truck
There’s no getting around it, the 2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone is not cheap. But it does get you nearly every feature offered to this full-size truck. Its spacious interior is filled with comfort features, including heated and ventilated rear seats. Plus, you even get things like wireless charging.
The Capstone Tundra is not right for everyone. If you haven’t set foot in a pickup truck since the early 2000s, you are likely to be shocked by what Toyota has done to this workhorse. And there is something to be said about that.
Americans love their full-size trucks, with some models being the most popular new vehicles on the market. And if you want a luxury vehicle that can tow, maybe $75,000 isn’t such a crazy price on a pickup of this caliber.
