Testing the Wade Mode Breaks Tesla Cybertruck Components
Sometimes trucks are as big as boats, but that doesn’t mean they can swim. However, the Tesla Cybertruck refuses to give up. Elon Musk said the Tesla Cybertruck should be able to wade through bodies of water that aren’t too rough.
Can the Tesla Cybertruck swim?
The Tesla Cybertruck brags about the ability to float in water and travel short distances, but please proceed with caution. The Cybertruck’s ability to swim hasn’t been officially tested.
Some people hang on to Elon Musk’s every word despite failing to deliver on his promises. For example, he said the Cybertruck would tow up to 15,000 lbs, but it maxes out at 11,000 lbs.
Also, Musk said that the Tesla Cybertruck should work as a boat with the ability to cross small amounts of water and stand up to moderate currents. He said it can even go in the sea.
The Cybertruck weighs up to 6,843 lbs while the average fishing boat weighs 2,500 lbs. But the Cybertruck is all-electric, so according to Torque News, it doesn’t need to have an air intake because there’s no internal combustion engine to feed.
This could give it superior water-fording abilities. Plus, it has the highest ground clearance in its class with the ability to lift to 17.4 inches.
The Cybertruck Wade Mode lifts the truck to its highest setting and pressurizes the battery pack with positive air from the adaptive air suspension to protect it from water.
But the mode may take up to 10 minutes to activate and only lasts for 30 minutes. Plus, damage caused by off-roading isn’t covered by the warranty. If you go deeper than 31 inches then you’re doing so at your own risk.
So, on paper, the Cybertruck is ready to swim. But one Wade Mode test ended very poorly. One owner took his truck through deep puddles after it rained.
In some areas, water came up to the windshield, and the Cybertruck did briefly act as a boat. It reached 30 mph at some points.
But the Cybertruck didn’t hold up against the water. It lost serval plastic body pieces that could be popped in. Also, the electric controls that open the tailgate and tonneau cover stopped working.
The Cybertruck will have to visit a service center to be fixed. Hopefully, those are the only issues, but the loss of plastic trim pieces doesn’t promote much confidence.
