The 2006 Acura TSX Is One of the Best Used Cars For Under $5K
The Acura TSX was first introduced in the 2004 model year. It was actually a rebadged version of the Honda Accord sold in Japanese and European markets. While similar, the TSX is smaller and slightly more sporty than the American Accord.
The Acura TLX replaced the TSX for the 2015 model year. While not as beloved as the Chevy Impala or Dodge Viper, there are still many reasons to miss the TSX. It was far ahead of its competition in terms of power and available features. Most of its models also have an excellent reliability rating, so it’s a great car to buy used. The cheapest one is the 2006 model, which you can usually find for under $5,000.
What’s so great about the 2006 Acura TSX?
The first-gen Acura TSX came standard with a peppy 2.4-liter engine rated at 200 hp and 164 lb-ft of torque. It was paired with a six-speed manual transmission, though a five-speed automatic was optional at no additional charge. For the 2006 model year, the Acura TSX got five more ponies as well as some other enhancements.
These included 17-inch wheels, side skirts, fog lights, and a slightly remodeled front and rear exterior. The upgraded engine also makes it one of the fastest Acura vehicles of all time. Tests show that it can reach 60 mph in a quick 7.1 seconds.
The Acura TSX also came with many more standard features than any other 2006 sports sedan. It came with a Bluetooth stereo, satellite radio, a built-in navigation system, and a moonroof. Leather seats with heating functionality are also standard. The 2006 models were also ahead of their segment when it came to safety features. All Acura TSX cars from 2006-2008 have a standard backup camera long before it was a mandatory function.
Does the 2006 Acura TSX have any problems?
Like all cars, the Acura TSX is still prone to some issues. 2006 wasn’t the worst year in terms of complaints, but there are still some problems drivers should know about. A few drivers reported having problems with the car’s automatic door lock. It would eventually fall off, possibly due to poor manufacturing materials. The cost to replace it is usually around $400.
Some also reported that the car’s battery would randomly die. Drivers reported that even after replacing the battery, they still experienced this issue. The problem lies within the TSX’s Hands-Free Phone Link. This feature drains the battery even when the car isn’t being driven. Unplugging the phone link after each use will eliminate this problem.
Power steering problems were also reported for the 2006 Acura TSX. These were most common once the vehicle had been driven between 60,000-80,000 miles. Drivers experienced a lot of resistance while trying to turn the wheel, sometimes accompanied by a loud rattling noise.
The problem was caused by leaking power steering fluid. Once this occurred, the rack and pinion steering would also eventually fail. Drivers usually had to replace the whole power steering system to fix the problem. On average, this costs $970. However, some reported having to pay as much as $3,000.
Are later Acura TSX models better?
According to Car Complaints, you should probably avoid buying an Acura TSX from 2012 due to excessive engine issues. Models from this year also experienced power steering failure. During its final two model years, the car had almost no complaints from its drivers.
If you’re buying used, stick with the 2006 TSX. It was a great hit with consumers; 83 percent said they would buy another one in the future. Given all its great features and stellar reliability, we think the 2006 Acura TSX is an excellent value.
