The iconic Volkswagen Beetle is such a pleasant ride that many enthusiasts think that you should own one, at least once. Throughout its long history, this classic coupe made a name for itself for being both sporty and fun. But unfortunately, VW  officially stopped producing the Beetle in 2019 so the only option we have now is to buy it used. If your heart is set on getting a Beetle, you might want to think twice before getting the 2015 model year.

When the 2015 VW Beetle was new

The 2015 Beetle was part of the third-generation redesign in 2012. Not much was made new for 2015 but there is a limited-edition Classic trim level available from this model year. The Beetle’s vintage quirky style on the outside is balanced out with a sharp interior. Its standard faux leather upholstery feels classy but you can also shop for models that have genuine leather. 

Tech-wise, the 2015 Beetle is quite simple. This model year was right before advanced infotainment systems became really popular. However, the 2015 Beetle does come standard with Bluetooth connectivity and an eight-speaker stereo system. For more modern features on this particular Beetle, look for the ones with a  5-inch touchscreen display and navigation system. 

What it’s like to drive the 2015 Beetle 

There are two solid engine options on this Beetle. Base models come with a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes a 170-horsepower. This standard engine accelerates well and should satisfy most drivers. For a more forceful experience, you will want to look for the R-Line models equipped with the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

The Beetle is ideal for city driving and it’s comfortable for long road trips. Excessive road noise isn’t an issue either. This coupe is also good on fuel economy and gets a combined 27 mpg overall. 

Reliability isn’t this model’s strong suit 

Since the Beetle is so cute and fun to drive, it is easy to overlook its downsides. However, there are some considerable flaws on the 2015 model to be aware of. This Beetle was recalled four times.

The 2015 Beetle was first recalled for a potential issue with its sunroof assembly on the hardtop models. Then it was recalled for a concern related to its fuel system. Other recall actions were connected to the Beetle’s engine cooling and electrical system. Because of all the recall issues, Consumer Reports gave the 2015 Beetle a terrible predicted reliability score. CR also gave this Beetle low marks specifically for its transmission, body hardware, and in-car electronics. 

Final thoughts 

The recalls on the 2015 Beetle make it less attractive but they don’t have to be a dealbreaker. It’s also worth mentioning that VW Beetle owner satisfaction is typically high. If you really want this 2015 model, just make sure that you bring up the recall issues with your auto dealer to make sure they are resolved.
