Though Hyundai has manufactured plenty of great vehicles, the Tucson is arguably one of its best.

According to U.S. News, the 2016 Hyundai Tucson stands among the top used SUVs. It offers a ton of great features that distinguish it from the competition. Add in a low price, and it’s hard to top this compact crossover.

Hyundai redesigned the Tucson in 2016, and U.S. News was impressed with the changes. It comes with two engine options: a standard 164-hp four-cylinder and an optional 175-hp turbo-four.

The interior is roomy enough but lacks leather seating. Regardless, the cloth seats are comfortable, and passengers in the back don’t feel cramped. Upper trim levels come equipped with an eight-inch touchscreen and navigation.

The Tucson also boasts decent safety features. It’s equipped with blind-spot monitoring, forward collision prevention with automatic braking, and lane-departure warning.

When it was brand-new, the 2016 Tucson cost around $15,857 to $21,814. Now you can find one for about $11,000 to $19,000, depending on its condition.

The 2016 Tucson has some issues

Though the 2016 Hyundai Tucson has a lot going for it, there are also a few drawbacks. For one, the standard four-cylinder engine isn’t exactly powerful. But there are also more serious problems.

One of those major issues is the wiring system. It can malfunction, causing the brake lights to remain on even when the brake pedal isn’t depressed. This can be a pain for drivers behind you who think you’re prepared to stop, and it can present a safety hazard because they never know when you’re actually stopping. The 2016 Tucson’s rear turn signals can also fail to come on, adding the confusion. 

Another hazardous problem involves the hood, which can fly up while the vehicle is in motion. This impedes the driver’s vision and can easily cause a wreck.

Yet another major issue is the transmission. It could suddenly fail, leaving the driver stranded in traffic.

Though these are serious problems, they were all covered by recalls. If you’re interested in the 2016 Tucson, make sure the model you’re considering includes the necessary repairs before you buy it.

Why is the 2016 model so great?

Despite the Hyundai Tucson’s issues, U.S. News was still impressed with it. “The Tucson was named a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS and received top scores in crash tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),” the review site wrote. “Packaged safety features include automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and rear parking sensors.”

The low price also sets the 2016 Tucson apart from its rivals. Though other vehicles might score better ratings, they can often be pricier. And for anyone on a budget, $1,000 is a big price difference.

Other vehicles on U.S. News’ list are the 2017 Kia Soul, the 2018 Toyota Camry, and the 2015 Honda Odyssey. But the 2016 Hyundai Tucson is the top SUV. So if you want a used crossover instead of a car or van, the Tucson is a solid choice.
