The Hyundai Veloster has a reputation for being one of the most fun and affordable cars you can buy. This is particularly true for the 2016 version. The 2016 Veloster serves up peppiness and a unique sense of style. However, there are a few flaws that make it less desirable.

 The 2016 Veloster features two different engine options. Base models will have a 138-hp 1.6-liter four-cylinder. The main benefit of this option is its solid fuel economy rating of up to 31 mpg overall. Although, the downside is that the Veloster’s standard engine is weak and laggy. 

For a quicker experience in the Veloster, you’ll want to shop for models with the turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 201-hp. The turbo-four also makes for a polished driving experience. As U.S. News highlights, the Veloster is standard with a six-speed manual transmission. Some models will have a six- or seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.  

As a new model, most critics said that the Veloster is fun to drive. However, some said that its suspension translates to a rougher ride. Others wished the Veloster’s handling was more engaging. 

“So it’s a lackluster performer. As it turns out, it’s just mediocre around town, too. Most who drove it noted an unduly harsh ride and vague, overboosted steering with a tendency to wander on the highway.”

On the inside 

The Veloster’s distinctive styling continues on the inside. It has a three-door coupe body-style and room for four. This Hyundai gets points for its comfortable seating, especially with the sports seat setup. 

Critics also liked the Veloster’s standard user-friendly touch-screen display. Other standard infotainment features include Bluetooth and satellite radio connection. You can look for upgraded versions with more gadgets, such as Siri Eyes Free and rear parking sensors.

There are a few drawbacks with the Veloster’s interior, though. Excess road noise could be bothersome for some. Additionally, its outward visibility isn’t the best due to its sloped roof lines. 

Predicted reliability and overall safety scores 

The 2016 Veloster received an above-average rating for predicted reliability from J.D. Power. 

At the time of this writing, there isn’t a significant amount of complaints associated with the 2016 Veloster. While the outlook for the Veloster’s dependability is attractive, its safety scores make it less so.

As U.S. News noted, the Veloster has below-average safety ratings. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it its highest possible score for its moderate overlap front, roof strength, and seat safety. Furthermore, the IIHS gave it an “Acceptable” mark for its side-impact safety. The Veloster got the second to last rating in the small overlap front: driver-side category, though. 

Is the 2016 Hyundai Veloster a good car? 

The 2016 Veloster isn’t the best option for a used compact car, mainly because of its crash test scores. Because of this, you’ll want to consider the Veloster’s class rivals.
