The 2016 Toyota Tacoma Has Insanely Expensive Issues
The Toyota Tacoma is a great mid-size truck, right? You really can’t go wrong with a used Toyota Tacoma, Right? Wrong. Not every Toyota Tacoma was created equally, and some used models need to be avoided, especially when it comes to the 2016 Toyota Tacoma.
2016 Toyota Tacoma Transmission Problems
According to CarComplaints, which allows real drivers to post reviews and complaints about vehicles, the 2016 Toyota Tacoma has a variety of transmission problems. One of the most prominent issues includes hard, jerky shifts.
One driver experienced a delay in shifting gears when trying to get up to highway speeds. Their Tacoma seemingly tried to shift into 6th gear to save fuel, and into 5th gear when speeding up. Their truck also tried to downshift when accelerating.

Another driver experienced a lot of jerking and jolting, along with surges and lagging. Another driver lost the ability to accelerate a few times on cold winter days. These problems occurred early on, before 10k miles. Reflashing the ECM was the attempted fix, but drivers still experienced hard shifts, and this maintenance was performed.
Along with rough shifting and lurching forward, some drivers faced a howling issue. The howling came from the rear differential and occurred between 55 to 65 mph. Dealers failed to determine the cause.
2016 Toyota Tacoma Engine Issues
Several drivers also reported engine problems with the 2016 Toyota Tacoma. With brand new trucks, drivers face tons of vibrations. The steering wheel, floor, seats, and more had a maddening vibration. The vibrations continued to occur after the rear leaf springs, rear disc brakes, and all four tires were replaced.
The engine is also known for being extremely loud. Multiple drivers faced a maddening clicking noise that couldn’t be fixed. Dealerships were unable to determine why the engines kept click, click, clicking.
Other drivers had their engines randomly stall. One Toyota Tacoma owner linked hot temperatures to the engine stalling because their truck turned off on 95 degree days. Another driver was going about 45 mpg when their engine randomly stalled. As a result, they lost power steering and the ability to brake.
2016 Toyota Tacoma Electrical Issues
Multiple drivers reported electrical issues with the 2016 Toyota Tacoma too. Some drivers couldn’t get various flashing warnings to turn off, including the VSC warning light. Dealerships suggest this issue was caused by corrosion on the sensors, but these issues occurred before drivers reached 10k miles.
Other drivers had to deal with the radio randomly shutting off. For unclear reasons, the radio would suddenly reboot. Sometimes this problem occurred more frequently when it was raining. One Toyota Tacoma owner had this radio problem persist after replacing it.
One driver had the connector for the heated seat under the driver’s seat fail. It overheated, causing the seat to become warm enough to burn people or catch the interior on fire. The connector got so hot that it melted.
Other drivers faced the same problem with this connector. Only they didn’t notice the connector was melted until they discovered that their heated seat wasn’t working. Some people did smell burning plastic and had the connector replaced at the dealership. Toyota was aware of this on-going issue but didn’t issue a recall.
