Kia may get more attention when it comes to modern SUVs than its corporate sibling Hyundai, but the Hyundai brand has its own lineup of attractive SUVs too. One of the most popular options is the Hyundai Tucson. This compact crossover may get a bad rep sometimes but it’s a good daily driver and a solid option to buy used. If value is your main priority, you might want to seriously consider getting the 2017 Hyundai Tucson.

Why the 2017 Tucson gets a bad rep

One of the Tucson’s greatest strengths is also why it gets harshly criticized. This SUV is ideal for drivers looking for a pleasant ride to take them on their daily journeys. Many enthusiasts have complained that the Tucson is too dull, that there are no performance frills. But, that’s not the point of this vehicle at all. Consumer Reports echoes our sentiments here. Not everyone needs, or even wants a ton of power for their daily drives. The Tucson is meant to be a safe and practical choice.

How the 2017 Tucson Drives

While it’s not the sportiest crossover you can buy, the Tucson offers agile handling. It generally handles bumps and dips in the road well too. The base models come with a four-cylinder engine that produces a 164-horsepower. There’s also a 175-hp, turbocharged four-cylinder engine available on the higher trims. Both of these are fine options but they can get a tad loud when accelerating at high speeds. Fuel economy ratings are on par for the compact crossover class.

On the inside

Where the 2017 Tucson really shines is on the inside. Its car cabin is handsome overall and its seats are comfy. Plus, the Tucson’s stain-resistant cloth interior was well received. There’s also plenty of head- and legroom throughout the cabin.

Hyundai added more modern infotainment features for the Tucson in 2017. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are both available on this model. There are also available advanced driver-assist features such as rear cross-traffic alert and forward-collision warning.

Safety and reliability

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named the Tucson as a Top Safety Pick+ which is its highest honor. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the 2017 Tucson a five-star crash-test safety rating. You should also know that the Tucson was recalled once according to the NHTSA. The recall action was related to a potential issue with the Tucson’s electrical system wiring. If you see the 2017 Tucson as a strong contender on your shopping list, just make sure to address this recall action with your auto dealer.

That being said, Consumer Reports gave the 2017 Tucson a lower predicted reliability score based on the recall issue. J.D. Power on the other hand gave this model an above-average reliability rating. But as you continue to do your research, you’ll see that owner satisfaction for the 2017 Tucson is pretty high so you don’t feel like you have to write off this vehicle based on what CR says.
