When it was new, critics liked that the 2018 CR-V was competitively priced, especially considering its feature options. As a used model, the 2018 CR-V is also among the most affordable options to buy pre-owned, and it has below-average ownership costs, according to U.S. News.  

U.S. News named the CR-V the winner of its 2018 Best Compact SUV for the Money award and the Best Compact SUV for Families. The organization also considers the 2018 CR-V as one of the best used SUVs you can buy for around $20K.

What’s it like to drive the 2018 Honda CR-V?

Honda’s CR-V remains one of the best-selling SUVs, whether you’re talking about buying new or used. The 2018 CR-V is part of the fifth-generation that launched in 2017. Compared to rivals like the Mazda CX-5, the CR-V is more vanilla, but that’s part of its charm.

The CR-V is ideal for drivers that want a mild-mannered driving experience. Base 2018 CR-V models will have a 184-hp, 2.4-liter four-cylinder. This four-cylinder makes for a comfortable ride, and it offers sufficient power for most driving situations. If you’re interested in more power, shop for models with the available turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 190-hp. 

Both engines are linked to continuously variable transmission. And for a non-hybrid model, these two powerplants boast the best fuel economy ratings in the class, as Consumer Reports highlighted. Although, CR notes that some drivers will find the CR-V to be a touch too firm. Others might be disappointed with the CR-V for its max-towing capacity of 1,500 pounds. 

Interior elements 

The 2018 CR-V shines bright on the inside since it’s cabin is both practical and refined. The CR-V can seat up to five people, and there’s plenty of room for passengers to stretch out. Cloth upholstery came standard on the CR-V, but some models will have leather seats. Other available amenities include heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

As a new model, critics also lauded the CR-V for its many tech offerings. The base models come with basic infotainment features, including a 5-inch display screen and Bluetooth. You can shop for upper-level trims that will have a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Some might also have navigation or an updated stereo. It is important to note here that critics like CR felt that the 2018 CR’s infotainment system was too “fussy.”

On a brighter note, the 2018 CR-V offers desirable active safety features too. Some models will have blind-spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking. The CR-V’s focus on safety contributed to its rankings as an IIHS Safety Pick. Additionally, the NHTSA gave this model a five-star crash-test safety rating.
