There’s much to enjoy about the 2018 CX-5. But according to data from Consumer Reports, owners have the most to say about the car’s driving experience. In CR’s member survey, many owners expressed that their CX-5 handles like a sports car. Others gushed about its quick acceleration and that it offered the “perfect” amount of power.

I test drove other mid-size SUV’s that felt like big clunky things that I’d have to get used to. Furthermore, 2018 CX-5 owners love how their SUV drives on the highway. One driver even compared this Mazda to an Audi they had for years. Another said the CX-5 still moves quickly, even with a full passenger load and cargo in the back. 

Performance options 

As CR highlights, there are two available engines for the 2018 CX-5. Base models will have a 187-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder, which is the one owners have raved about the most. Some models will have the optional turbocharged 2.2-liter diesel four-cylinder that makes 174-hp. No matter which one you choose, a six-speed automatic transmission comes standard.

Both engines make the 2018 CX-5 feel fun to drive. Another bonus is that that fuel economy is a highlight for this model. Turbodiesel models get up to 29 mpg overall; those with the standard four-cylinder get up to a combined 28 mpg. 

Cabin comforts 

In addition to its driving dynamics, owners also love the comfort that the 2018 CX-5 provides. It can seat up to five people, and there’s plenty of head- and legroom. What makes this Mazda even better is that its cabin is tranquil.

“I’ve owned many Mazdas and this is by far the quietest. Road noise is minimal and approaches or exceeds what I noticed in “premium” brands such as Lexus, Acura, BMW and Mercedes. Seats are supportive and bolstered. I wish there were thigh extensions “sport seats” but Mazda doesn’t offer this on any vehicle. Overall, the ride is excellent.”

The 2018 CX-5 came with cloth upholstery, but some will have faux leather or leather upholstery. Other available amenities include heated seats and a heated steering wheel. This Mazda also came with a few modern in-car electronics, including a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display, a backup camera, and blind-spot monitoring. 

Some models will have more gadgets, including a Bose audio system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto weren’t initially available on this model, but Mazda will retrofit these smartphone apps. Depending on the features and mileage on the vehicle you pick, expect to pay between $18,525 – $23,225 for a 2018 CX-5.
