BMW is known for beautifully designed, classic-looking models but the German carmaker tried funking it up with its revamped 2020 X6 SUV. This SUV was created to stand out in the crowd, but we can’t help but think the unique styling is questionable. Nonetheless, if you are able to look past its odd exterior, you’ll see that the X6 has plenty to offer.

Beastly performance

A huge selling point for the X6 is its array of high-performing engines. The X6 40i comes standard with a 335-hp turbocharged six-cylinder engine but the M50i’s 4.4-liter V-8 engine with a 523-horsepower is far more exhilarating. The V8 engine helps the boxy SUV ascend from 0 to 60 mph in under four seconds. There’s also an X6 M version that generates a mighty 600-horsepower. 

Each engine option is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. You also have the option for all-wheel drive. No matter which engine you choose, you’re bound for a wonderfully smooth and satisfying ride.

Luxurious comfort

Beyond the X6’s beastly exterior is an elegant, high-quality interior. The interior on this SUV is more aligned with BMW’s traditional design style. The leather-upholstered seating is welcoming and the headspace and is more expansive than you would think. Outside noise isn’t a problem in the X6 which makes it feel more comfortable and serene. You can further customize the interior with a leather dashboard or glass controls.

Advanced technology

OK so, the infotainment system in the X6 is a bit divisive. On one hand, the infotainment display is handsome and comes standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay. Android Auto connectivity is on the horizon. There are also available upgrades such as a wifi hotspot, built-in navigation, and wireless charging. On the other hand, these high-tech offerings may take some additional time to get used to. 

The graphics on the touchscreen are easy to read and the traditional rotary knobs are ideal for when you’re actually driving. But what can be overwhelming is figuring out how to operate the system through the different voice commands and hand gestures in addition to the touchscreen, buttons, and knobs.

As far as safety goes, the 2020 X6 has yet to be tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety so it’s not possible to rank its overall safety. Be that as it may, the X6 comes standard with advanced driver-assist features like forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring.  

Quirks to be aware of 

Aside from the clunky infotainment system, there are additional flaws and quirks to be mindful of. The X6’s funky style makes a statement, we’ll give it that. Still, the rectangular design makes it hard to see out of the back. The slanted roofline also compromises the available cargo space. 

All things considered, the X6 is still a good luxury SUV overall. Its predicted reliability rating is high and its fuel economy is toward the higher end of its class. If you can compromise on the higher horsepower and upgraded infotainment, it might also be worth looking into buying a used X6 model.
