The Chevy Corvette has been one of the most popular sports cars for several years. We’ve seen it go through many changes as time went by, so is it any wonder that the Corvette Stingray won an award? Well, actually more than one award. But there’s one that’s impressing sports car enthusiasts as well as tough critics. 

For the 2020 model of the C8 Stingray, Chevy made some major changes, including a move of the engine from the front to midway down the vehicle. Because of that, ALG gave it the Redesign of the year award. 

What earned the Chevy Corvette the ALG Redesign of the Year award

The concept of having a mid-engine feature isn’t new to Chevy. Zora Arkus-Duntov, known as the father of the Corvette, pushed to get it produced some 50 years ago.

But the timing wasn’t quite right, as it just didn’t make good business sense at the time. However, it’s now a half-century later, and the timing seemed perfect. 

Chevy took a huge risk by getting on the drawing board and consequently the production line. Rolling onto the showroom floors is the all-new Corvette C8 for the 2020 model year. 

It’s precisely this feature that caught the eyes of ALG, who subsequently gave it the Redesign of the Year award. 

Chevy’s accomplishments for 2020

While the Chevy Corvette took the award for best redesign of a vehicle, it wasn’t the only one it took home. There were a few more, but one that stands out is Kelley Blue Book’s Sports Car Resale Value award for 2020. 

KBB took notice when they saw all the changes the Corvette went through, but the price only went up about $1,000. The previous generation of the Corvette had already boosted value, and they felt this new generation would do the same. They scored the resale value of the C8 at 54.9% for five years’ worth of ownership.

There are not too many cars in the sports vehicle segment, or elsewhere for that matter, that can really say the same. The Corvette just may be paving the way for other high-performance vehicles in the future. 

What other changes have been made on the 2020 Corvette?

Chevy made another bold move, and that’s to drop the stick shift for a more favorable eight-speed double-clutch transmission. It will, however, allow you to select gears manually using the paddle-shifters installed on the steering wheel. 

With the mid-engine feature, Chevy brought more power to the motor. The base model now puts out 495 hp, which is about 40 horsepower more than the last generation model could muster. It proved to be pretty useful as the Corvette can now do 0 to 60 in, believe it or not, less than three seconds. Of course, that’s when you add the performance package as reported by CNBC. 

One change surprised many at an unveiling in California last year. Mark Reuss, GM’s president, announced to the gathering crowd that the Corvette C8 Stingray would be under $60,000. True to his word, the Corvette starts out at $58,900 MSRP base price. It makes you wonder what the future holds for this vehicle. 

Another area they made leaps and bounds in is the interior. Where they struggled before, this new model has a higher-quality fit and finish than we’ve seen in the past. Now you’ll see elegant leather seating, plenty of useful tech features, and driver-focused enhancements. 

Chevy’s complete vehicle redesign of the Corvette paid off because not only did they win that award from ALG, but they also got something even better. Corvette enthusiasts and critics alike are more than impressed by it.
