Sure, most new vehicles will brag about having ample or spacious cargo room. But some sources take the time to size and evaluate cargo claims precisely. Consumer Reports performs such an exercise on several compact SUVs, to see just how much fits and to determine how realistic a crossover’s space really is. There are a few models for 2020 with impressive results, including the 2020 Chevy Equinox. It’s one compact SUV that still provides plenty of cargo room in a very literal and user-friendly way.

A closer look at the cargo capacity for the 2020 Chevy Equinox

The Consumer Reports staff takes a slightly different approach to rank an SUV’s cargo capability. They make use of an expandable box and enlarge it for each contender, measuring the space within the box as the total cubic feet of available space.

It’s this process that they use to rank which crossovers can haul everyday items, like luggage or store purchases, with ease. The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox is rated by Consumer Reports as one of the most spacious and roomiest SUVs out there. The cargo area officially came to a measurement of 32 cubic feet. But added to that is the capability of the rear seats to fold and some of the class’s best passenger legroom as well.

What else the Chevy Equinox does right

Cargo capability is a huge plus for the 2020 Chevy Equinox. But it also brings a myriad of other great features. Most reviews suggest it continues to offer one of the smoothest rides over a variety of surfaces. The turbocharged 2.0-liter engine is gutsy and fun.

Add all-wheel drive if you’d prefer. And enjoy many of the best driver-assist features as standard. The infotainment system is fresh and easy to use. Everything about the Equinox feels modern, making it a solid choice for many consumers.

Setbacks you might consider deal-breakers

When you start your search and begin hunting for a new SUV, you’ll probably start with a list of features that you have to have. You may even consider creating a separate list of those extras that would instead be nice to have. Deal-breakers are entirely subjective and will vary by buyer preferences, but often include price points.

The 2020 Chevy Equinox is great at many things, but some of its best options usually come above the base level L trim. Reviews point out that there isn’t much pep or many amenities at the more reasonable entry-levels. Some argue you might find higher quality materials in other models for similar price ranges.

Chevy makes it easy to add on packages and make trim-level selections that offer only what you need. Some reviews suggest the mid-level LT may be the value configuration. But adding in extras, including tinted rear windows, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, or SiriusXM satellite radio, can quickly and significantly add up to thousands of dollars.

Upgrades to the engine alone, which most reviews suggest is worth doing, will run almost $2,500. So, be mindful of carving out your best version. It won’t be hard to go over budget or end up paying for features that may come standard on other models. The MSRP range for the Equinox starts at $23,800 and runs upwards of $35,700.

The 2020 Chevy Equinox has plenty to offer and won’t disappoint, especially in cargo capacity. If your daily grind or weekend routine involves luggage, golf clubs, kids’ sports gear, or large pets, the Equinox is a stellar selection. Just be mindful of any other features you need in a crossover. You don’t want to lose sight of the value of extras that may come more readily available on other models.
