The 2020 Chevy Equinox Is a Star After All
Compact SUVs, including the Mazda CX-5 and the Toyota RAV4, have inspired many debates on what models are considered the best. As discussions ensued, Chevrolet quietly gained in on rivals with the Equinox. The 2020 Chevy Equinox impressed reviewers with its technology, while others critiqued its performance. But for many consumers, the Equinox is the total package.
Where the 2020 Chevy Equinox ranks
The Equinox has been one of Chevy’s most popular SUVs for the last few years. Although, it seems like only recently that the Equinox has gained mass appeal. Reviews for the 2020 version have been pretty consistent. Consumer Reports ranks the 2020 Equinox in the middle of the compact SUV class, and so does U.S. News.
For the most part, reviewers at Car and Driver also like Equinox but feel that the SUV lacks the charms that other compact SUVs have. While that might be true, this Chevy has earned lots of fans. Chevrolet sold 67,475 Equinox models by the end of Q3 2020, according to GoodCarBadCar. This figure makes the Equinox one of the best-selling models in its class.
How the Equinox performs

The Equinox is a mixed bag when it comes to performance. Base models have a 170-hp, 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a six-speed automatic. The base engine is a solid choice for fuel economy, but many respected critics say it’s lethargic. Another drawback here is that the standard transmission isn’t the smoothest.
Most road testers say that the available turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder is more appropriate for the Equinox’s size. The available turbo-four produces 252-hp and is linked to a nine-speed automatic. Even though the optional engine earns more praise, you’ll be OK with the standard one. Overall, the Equinox is a pleasant ride, and it absorbs bumps well too.
On the inside
There’s a lot to like about the Equinox on the inside. It presents excellent visibility and can comfortably seat up to five. The 2020 model comes standard with a simple cloth interior. Available amenities include leather upholstery, heated and cooled front seats, and a heated back row. The main drawback to the Equinox’s interior is that some of its finishings are cheap.
Tech-lovers are likely to enjoy the Equinox too. This Chevy comes with a user-friendly infotainment system that consists of a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a wifi hotspot. Safety is also a highlight of the Equinox’s in-car tech. Standard active safety features include forward-collision warning, lane departure warning, and pedestrian detection.
Should you buy the Equinox?
If your priorities are to have a comfortable ride with lots of modern tech, the Equinox is a worthy choice for you. Depending on available inventory, you can still get a brand-new 2020 Equinox, which begins at $23,800. There aren’t any significant changes for the upcoming model year, but the 2022 Equinox is supposed to be worth the wait.
