The 2020 Chevy Silverado is More Reliable Than the Ford F-150
The 2020 Chevy Silverado continues to go after the 2020 Ford F-150 and may have just pulled off a big win. In terms of reliability, the Chevrolet Silverado just outranked the Ford F-150, which is the most popular truck in the world. It can’t lose to the Silverado!
The 2020 Chevy Silverado has more reliability than the Ford F-150
The folks over at PickupTruckTalk kindly took the time to rank each full-size 2020 truck by reliability. The 2020 Toyota Tundra came in first place while the 2020 Ram 1500 came in last place. Those are pretty surprising rankings, but more on those later.
According to the list, the 2020 Chevy Silverado ranks in 4th place while the 2020 Ford F-150 landed in 5th place. So what makes the Chevrolet Silverado the more reliable option based on their ranking system?
PickupTruckTalk created a list of the most reliable trucks for 2020 based on predicted ratings. By assessing each truck for the past five years to determine which options had the most frequent problems and more expensive problems, they could predict how the 2020 models will hold up.
The problems come from the CarComplaints forum, where drivers list what went wrong with their rides. You can compare the problems by each model year, and the number of recalls for each vehicle is recorded as well. However, some recalls affect more vehicles than others.
Why is the 2020 Chevy Silverado reliable?
The Chevy Silverado ranks in 4th place for reliability because previous model years had a few concerning issues. The model years with the most problems include 2014, 2015, and 2017. The 2017 chevy Silverado has a large number of transmission complaints.
But Chevrolet co-developed a 10-speed transmission with Ford for the 2019 models, so hopefully, the transmission issues have been solved. Also, wait, the transmission was co-created with Ford? Its largest rival?! That’s nuts.
The 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8 engines were also updated in 2019 with a new Dynamic Fuel Management System, but reports suggest it burns oil. Also, a 2.7-liter turbocharged engine and 3.0-liter Duramax engine are being added to the lineup. There have been 19 recalls for the Chevy Silverado in the past 5 years, and Consumer Reports gave it a B.
Is the 2020 Ford F-150 reliable?
A new Ford F-150 rolls off the assembly line in 53 seconds. That’s super fast and a little concerning. PickupTruckTalk noted that you wouldn’t expect the 2020 Ford F-150 to rank as high as lower-volume trucks due to this factor.
The model years with the most problems for the Ford F-150 include 2013, 2015, and 2016. A faulty electronic body controller on the 2016 Ford F-150 became a problem that plagued the trucks for years. The problem was so prevalent that owners figured out how to repair it themselves for $60 to $100.
Plus, water was getting sucked into the Ecoboost engines through the intercooler, but that problem was addressed. Engine issues, a warping dashboard, and sync issues still continue to plague the Ford F-150, though.
Maybe the 2021 Ford F-150 with its new Hybrid PowerBoost system will solve a few different problems. Until it’s released, the Ford F-150 remains in 5th place with 45 recalls in the past 5 years and a C rating from Consumer Reports.
