SUVs are the hottest segment in the auto industry. Due to their popularity in today’s market, every major brand has added some sort of crossover to its product line. In 2019, SUVs outsold sedans two to one, causing auto manufacturers to take notice. In the midsize SUV segment, the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a noble contender, but the 2020 Ford Edge proves to be much more practical.

Is the 2020 Ford Edge one of the best midsize SUVs?

CarFax recently reviewed the top 10 two-row midsize SUVs of 2020.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee, which came in at No. 7, is a good choice for daily commuters but better suited for off-road driving. The Trackhawk model is incredibly fast with a 700-hp supercharged Hemi V8, but for the everyday driver, the 295-hp V6 engine should suffice. The interior cabin, while comfortable, is smaller than others in its class.

In comparison, the 2020 Ford Edge ranked a few spots above the Cherokee at No. 3 on the CarFax list. With a base price of $31,100, the top-ranking SUV offers an above-average fuel economy of 23 mpg combined. CarFax was not only impressed with the stellar crash test scores but the bountiful list of standard features. The roomy interior, lively performance, and cargo carrying capacity helped the Edge stand out among the competition.

The No. 1 top-ranked vehicle was the popular 2020 Subaru Outback. With a base price of $26,795, CarFax appreciated the spacious cabin, standard AWD, and well-controlled suspension. Taking the No. 2 spot was the Hyundai Santa Fe, which they said, “packs a lot into a budget-friendly package.”

Impressive features of the 2020 Ford Edge

The 2020 Ford Edge is part of the second generation introduced in 2015. New for this year model is dual-zone automatic climate control as well as a new ST Line trim.

There is plenty of space in the Edge for both passengers and luggage, having one of the largest interiors in its class. The cabin, while dated, offers comfortable seating and is whisper quiet even at highway speeds.

The standard four-cylinder engine puts out 250 hp, while the sporty Edge ST edition provides 335 hp with its turbocharged V6. The advanced driver assistance aids and the extensive list of standard features push the Edge to the top of the best SUVs list for 2020.

Edmunds recommends the Edge, saying, “Buyers looking for a midsize SUV that’s a little nicer than the mainstream choices without a budget-busting price will find plenty to like in the 2020 Ford Edge.”

A practical choice

If you enjoy off-road driving and hitting backwoods trails filled with rocks, mud, and other types of adventurous terrain, then the Jeep Grand Cherokee may be the right choice for you. But, if you are more interested in daily commuting, great fuel economy, and class-leading quality, the 2020 Ford Edge is a much more practical choice.

A midsize SUV makes sense for consumers looking for a little more room. While compact SUVs are all the rage right now, a midsize crossover offers not only more space but more power to back it up. Upgrading to the midsize range allows for a larger cabin, increased cargo room, and higher tow ratings. For larger families, the three-row models available in the midsize class are plentiful.

Unless you plan on going off-road often, the Ford Edge is the more practical choice.
