The 2020 Ford Expedition Is Nice, but Not $70k Nice
The 2020 Ford Expedition is one fantastic way to transport your entire family. This SUV received the top ranking from U.S. News & World Report for “Best Large SUVs for 2020.” It also earned the “Full-Size SUV Best Buy of 2020” award from Kelley Blue Book.
For 2020, the King Ranch trim has been added and the Co-Pilot360 suite of advanced driver-assist systems now comes standard. CARFAX recently reviewed the model year, and while it liked the large SUV, it felt it was overpriced. Here’s a look at the pluses and minuses of the 2020 Ford Expedition.
Powertrain and handling
CARFAX did like that the 2020 Ford Expedition’s engine is powerful. It has a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 that produces 375 hp. It’s paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission. The top Platinum trim’s version of the engine generates 400 hp.
The engine is able to easily move the heavy 2.75-ton SUV, and CARFAX found it “never seemed strained.” It even did well around sharp corners and provided a smooth ride.
It is able to tow up to 9,300 pounds when equipped with the towing package. Without that package, it can tow 6,500 pounds. With the size of the vehicle, the 2020 Expedition can be tough to drive in small spaces. CARFAX didn’t think the steering offered enough precision. It is available with either rear-wheel or all-wheel drive.
Interior of the 2020 Ford Expedition
The 2020 Ford Expedition provides a roomy cabin along with big seats and large windows. However, its finishes include lots of hard plastics and cheap materials. CARFAX felt that for the price, the quality should be better.
Despite the finishes, the cabin features three rows of roomy seats that all recline. The second and third rows both fold down electronically. The second-row seats also slide and tip in multiple ways, adding to passenger comfort and making it easy to get to the third row.
CARFAX found the seats themselves to be “just OK” in terms of materials and supportiveness. The large windows and available panoramic sunroof add to the expansive and bright feeling inside the Expedition.
Technology in the 2020 Ford Expedition
According to CARFAX, the 2020 Ford Expedition has too many small buttons, although generally having buttons in addition to the touchscreen is helpful. In this case, the touchscreen could have been utilized to control more functions. It uses the Ford Sync 3, which CARFAX says is “easy to use.” It is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The 2020 Expedition also has a rotary gear selector for the transmission. Some drivers have strong opinions on whether they like or dislike the rotary selector.
The now-standard Co-Pilot360 advanced driver-assist features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring. However, it doesn’t include features like Cadillac’s Super Cruise hands-free driving or Tesla’s Autopilot.
2020 Ford Expedition pricing
According to CARFAX, the version of the 2020 Ford Expedition that it tested came in at $71,865, including destination charges. Given the high price, CARFAX recommended that buyers consider other three-row options, including possibly the Ford Explorer or the Audi Q7.
Lower-priced 2020 Expeditions start at $52,810, while the 2020 Ford Explorer has a starting price of $32,765. The 2020 Audi Q7 has a starting price of $54,800. The Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 is another luxury option to consider, with its starting price of $75,950.
The 2020 Expedition offers plenty of space and a powerful engine, but for the cost at higher trims, buyers would probably expect to have better interior finishes and fewer hard plastics.
