The new year brings new models for many vehicles. Ford is no exception, even though their company has been in the limelight for other reasons lately. It plans to roll out the anticipated 2020 version of their Expedition SUV. This tall and lengthy vehicle isn’t new to the automotive market, and it has a nice following of loyal drivers.

But, after some tweaking for this year, new buyers are eager to see how well the 2020 model stands up in reviews. Consumer Reports put it to the test and also asked drivers who currently own a previous model of the Expedition to fill out a survey to show what they like and don’t like about the vehicle. The results are now in, and it looks like it ranks very high in owner satisfaction.

What does owner satisfaction mean for the 2020 Ford Expedition?

In Consumer Report’s annual survey with Expedition owners, 88% of them said they would purchase a newer model if given the chance. According to the survey results, people like the driving experience and the level of comfort it provides the most. This includes the smooth acceleration and stable handling on the road with the roomy cabin and comfortable seating.

The survey shows that drivers on average gave an 82 out of 100 for the driving experience and a rating of 87 out of 100 for comfort. Another area that some owners were pleased with was the styling of the Expedition SUV, which got a rating of 79 out of 100. One place that got the lowest rating had to do with the value of the vehicle price. Only a small portion felt the price point was appropriate for what they wanted. The rest felt that it fell short of their expectations.

What areas did the Consumer Reports like about the 2020 Ford Expedition?

The 3.5-liter V6 engine and the 10-speed automatic transmission are a good match since Consumer Reports liked the acceleration; the vehicle takes 7.3 seconds to go from 0 to 60 MPH. The 375-hp from the motor gives it plenty of power, so it can more than handle the 9,300-lb towing capacity the 2020 Ford Expedition is rated for. They also loved the interior space, which they felt had high-quality materials, comfortable seating, and easy-to-use controls.

The driver’s seat position is another positive element of the Expedition. You can set the seat high enough to see over the hood, and it comes with adjustable pedals for the shorter drivers who need more control over the positioning for driving.

As for safety, the Ford Expedition received 5-star ratings from the NHTSA for the frontal and side crash tests, and it comes with a decent amount of standard features for a safe driving experience. Some of them include automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, and blind-spot monitoring to name just a few.

What points did it fall short on?

The biggest problem Consumer Reports had with the Expedition was its less-than-stellar fuel economy rating. They report that it gets 23 highway miles per gallon and only 11 MPG in the city. Even though the overall average rating is up by 2 MPG from the previous year’s models, it still only gets 16 MPG, which is why they gave it a 1 out of 5 on their report.

They also didn’t care for the Expedition’s ride. They felt it was too stiff and needed some extra encouragement from the steering wheel to get through corners. Emergency handling fell short as well. Avoidance maneuvering didn’t perform quite as it should, so they gave it a score of 2 out of 5.

The 2020 Ford Expedition overall received a score of 73 out of 100 from Consumer Report. While there were some problem areas, it still received a decent rating compared to other Ford SUVs that Consumer Reports didn’t like as well.
