Some traditions, especially within the auto industry, reach their peak and must finally come to an end. The finish line is coming for the Ford Fusion as Ford announced it would be phasing out the popular sedan. While some fans may be left hanging their heads in dismay, the Fusion isn’t just bowing out quietly. You can buy one of the last of its kind with some new design features that make it feel like the Ford Fusion’s last hurrah is kind of a big one.

What’s new for the 2020 Ford Fusion?

Ford Fusion fans shouldn’t fret just yet. You can still buy the midsize sedan this year, and it has plenty to offer. Ford has discontinued a few things, including the V6 Sport trim and paddle shifters for the 1.5-liter engine. You will still have all those features you’d expect, like quality materials, easy-to-use controls, and available all-wheel drive.

It’s loaded with standard safety equipment as well. The Fusion is going out with a bang in terms of exterior color options. New this year are the Iconic Silver, Alto Blue, and mood-altering Rapid Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat options.

The Ford Fusion had a good, solid run

The Ford Fusion has been a success for the blue oval automaker, to say the least. Making its debut back in 2013, the Fusion was set to bring a fresh take on fuel economy, sporty fun, and family function to the midsize sedan segment, and it did just that. Sales of this car were most popular in 2014 and 2015, with over 600,000 of them rolling off the lots within those 24 months.

But, over the following years, consumers began shifting to the SUV and crossover classes, and the Fusion started losing its fan base. By 2018, Ford decided to cancel its advertising budget for the sedan and gently announced plans to eventually phase out production in the coming years.

Why Ford is stepping away from the sedan market

The bottom line is the sedan market isn’t as popular as it once had been. Consumer preferences ultimately determine what kind of vehicles are on the market, and over the past few years, SUVs have been king.

Ford has officially announced its plans to stick with SUV and truck production as flagship vehicles. It will continue to expand into the electric and hybrid markets, starting with the Ford Focus Active. Don’t worry; the Ford Mustang isn’t going anywhere either. But it may be the end of the rest of the Ford sedans for good.

Ford has big plans to come

Ford may be bailing on the sedan, but there are rumors that the Fusion name will stick around. A few sources shared first looks at a Fusion breed of vehicle that rivals the Subaru Outback. Other sources are reporting there may be a 2021 Mondeo, which is the European version of the Fusion.

So, while we may have to say goodbye to the Ford Fusion sedan after this year, we may see an entirely new Fusion variety in the coming model years. Until then, consumers can expect to see Ford expand into electric powertrains across many of its existing portfolios, including the F-150 and the Mustang. EV upgrades are also in the works for the Explorer, Escape, and Bronco too.

Fans may have to say goodbye to their beloved Fusion, but there’s a good chance a more appealing Fusion sibling comes to fruition. And, if it’s too hard to see it come to an end, you can certainly buy one of the last of its kind this year. Get yours with the Rapid Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat and help the Fusion go out with a bang.
