I recently spent a week in the 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited. Overall, I was utterly impressed with the features and the generally upscale feeling of the car as a whole. For the price point, we can ask for little more from a car. Standard features are generous in every trim level of this sedan. In fact, the redesigned Sonata is luxurious beyond its means.

“If you want a car that hits luxury-brand benchmarks at an affordable price, the 2020 Hyundai Sonata could be just the thing.”

Car and Driver

If you want an affordable car that you’ll likely spend a lot of time in, the 2020 Hyundai Sonata is a great and comfortable vessel to haul the family around. For those that haven’t jumped on the crossover bandwagon and still want a car, the Sonata is absolutely worth a test drive. While it’s no Chevrolet Corvette C8 or $80,000 luxury sedan like the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, it’s a fantastic way to get a lot of luxury for a great price.

How much is the Hyundai Sonata?

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata SE starts at $23,600, as per the Hyundai website. The 2020 Hyundai Sonata Limited starts at $33,500. The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid that I tested shows a starting price of $35,300. The Hybrid powertrain is more powerful than the standard 1.6-liter turbocharged gas engine.

The Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited also gets over 50 miles to the gallon on the highway. After my week of driving––mostly on city streets, and trying to strain the gas mileage––my average was 43 mpg. So, while it does have a higher initial cost it will save in the long run at the fuel pump.

Generous standard features

Even in the entry-level, the SE is an asset in many ways. The 8-inch touch-screen infotainment comes standard with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. The standard driver assistance features are abundant.

Included in the redesigned Hyundai Sonata SE are adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, automatic high-beams, pedestrian detection, and forward-collision warning. Additionally, standard features for the 2020 redesigned Sonata offer lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, a rearview camera, and driver attention monitoring.

The SEL and SEL Plus trims each add more creature comforts. These include features like a leather-wrapped steering wheel and power-adjustable seats. However, the Hyundai Sonata Limited offers everything from genuine leather upholstery to the upgraded Bose sound system to ventilated front seats. The Limited trim Sonata I had the privilege of testing left me absolutely impressed.

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Limited

As I spent the entire week in a Hybrid Sonata, my hands-on experience with the redesigned Sonata is limited to that model. That said, I imagine that every ounce of luxury carries over between models. The greatest difference would obviously be the powertrain. In addition, there are a few sparing style differences––the wheels are the most notably different between models.

One of the coolest features on the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid that I totally geeked out on was the solar panels up top. The roof of the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has built-in solar technology that charges the hybrid battery. The display cluster tells you everything. There’s even dynamic animation that shows where the energy from your powertrain is being distributed.

Overall, I’d recommend this car to anyone shopping for a sedan. In fact, if I wasn’t so dedicated to owning a minivan I might go buy one myself. While it’s not a top-tier luxury car, it feels nice and solid and offers a wealth of creature comforts––especially in the Limited trim.
