The 2020 Lamborghini Huracán EVO is not the best version of the Huracán series. That honor goes squarely to Lamborghini’s 2018 Huracán Performante, which won the 2018 MotorTrend Best Driver’s Car award. But while the 2018 version is better, the 2020 Lamborghini Huracán EVO is still flying off showroom floors.

The 2018 Lamborghini Huracán Performante’s functionality and features

As per MotorTrend’s road test, the Lamborghini Huracán Performante’s 5.2-liter V10 engine can propel it from 0 to 60 in an astounding 2.6 seconds. Its aluminum and carbon-fiber frame keeps it lightweight and capable of hitting top speeds of over 200 miles. With 630 hp and a seven-speed clutch transmission, this lightning-fast model epitomizes the speed and sleekness for which Lamborghinis are known.

A bit of that souped-up performance results from a relatively new active aerodynamics system known as Aerodynamica Lamborghini Attiva, or ALA for short. According to Car and Driver, ALA uses dual-mouthed intakes to feed cool air onto hot exhaust while simultaneously funneling air through the FC wing. ALA also uses electronically controlled motors to open and close the dual flaps in the wing, as well as the flap in the snout, to reduce drag or increase downforce. Known as aero vectoring, this system lets drivers hit high velocities on straightaways and curves without losing control when accelerating or decelerating.

Rounded out by a robust stability control system, back-loaded weight distribution, all-wheel drive, and stiff suspension, the Performante allows for ultra-smooth and safe handling. And in addition to safe handling, the Performante is a comfortable ride, with a luxurious interior finish and easy to use big-screen infotainment system.

It’s no small wonder the Performante was named Best Driver’s Car by MotorTrend and garnered praise from other automotive publications like Car and Driver and CNET’s RoadShow. But the 2020 Lamborghini Huracán EVO doesn’t fully live up to the reputation of its predecessor.

Why the 2020 Lamborghini Huracán Evo fares worse than its predecessors

MotorTrend notes that the Lamborghini Huracán EVO still boasts the Performante’s impressive 5.2-liter V10 engine and the bells and whistles of luxury touches and technology. It still handles incredibly smoothly as well, and if you’re looking for a new Lamborghini, you really can’t go wrong with this gorgeous car.

That said, the EVO lacks the ALA system that sets the Performante apart. MotorTrend reviewers also noted that the EVO is heavier than the Performante. As a result, you’ll find the EVO will lag the Performante by as much as 3.0 seconds on a track. It still goes fast, but you’re not going to get that peak performance that ALA would give you.

If a Performante is not in the cards, you may be looking at one of the EVO’s competitors, like the Chevrolet Corvet C8 or the Ferrari F8 Tributo. However, despite lacking ALA, the EVO still packs a serious punch and should remain at the top of your list.

The 2020 model’s sustained popularity

Indeed, the Lamborghini Huracán EVO performs so well it too landed MotorTrend’s coveted Best Driver’s Car award, as well as Robb Report’s Car of the Year award. The main reasons? The EVO outperforms its competition when cornering and braking at top speeds. Its rapid steering response, quick turn-in, and effortless handling make driving an EVO absolutely sublime.

And compared to its competition, the EVO’s all-around high-level performance makes it the superior option, hands-down. While the Ferrari F8 Tributo comes in a bit faster on a track, it handles less confidently at high speeds. The Porsche 911 Turbo S performs far better on roads than it does on tracks. And the Mustang Shelby GT500 is simply outclassed all around in terms of performance.

Whether you’re speeding down a highway, traversing a twisty hill, or doing laps around a track, the EVO crushes the competition. Any competing vehicle not named the Performante that is. Still, with topflight industry accolades and robust sales, according to the Los Angeles Times, the 2020 Lamborghini Huracán EVO is poised to remain at the top of sportscar enthusiasts’ most-wanted lists.
