The Mercedes-Benz Metris came off the production line as a work van. But looking at what it offers, it seems it’s more valuable than just being a workhorse. The Mercedes-Benz Metris has a structure that could essentially turn it into a camper van conversion, one that’s completely customizable. CNET explains what features it currently has so you could see how it could be transformed into a camper van for your adventures.

What makes the Mercedes-Benz Metris a suitable candidate for camping?

The Mercedes-Benz Metris comes in two wheelbase sizes. One is 126-inches long while the other is 135 inches. Overall, the length of the van is approximately 211.4 inches, which makes it longer than some other vans in this segment. It’s also a tad bit wider and taller than its rivals as well.

The cargo van model has nothing behind the front seats, which is good since it leaves you plenty of room to customize the space the way you want. But, if you’re looking for something that is already done for you, they set up the Metris Weekender model for four adults to sleep in.

Powering it up is a 2.0-liter Inline four engine that puts out 208 hp with 258 lb-ft of torque. Paired with it is a seven-speed automatic transmission, enabling it to tow up to 5,000 lbs if needed. The van also has a payload capacity of 2,370 lbs. The Metris is a workhorse that can carry whatever you need for your next adventure with ease.

What are the cons of using the Metris?

One of the biggest drawbacks of the Mercedes-Benz Metris as a camper van is the outdated infotainment technology. Despite having one of the best technological systems of any brand, Mercedes-Benz, for some reason, chose not to use it with the Metris.

Instead, they implemented an old infotainment system with a 5.8-inch screen, which is too small to use effectively. It runs the outdated Command system with a disappointing navigational interface. For those looking to use modern automotive tech, like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, you won’t find them here. The Metris also doesn’t come with any Wi-Fi.

While the Mercedes-Benz Metris does come with a lot of driver assistance features, there’s one that you won’t find. Adaptive cruise control is missing from the list of amenities, and it’s one that could be very useful for longer trips.

The price is another drawback with the Metris. It’s one of the most expensive on the market when you compare it to its biggest rivals, the Ford Transit and the Ram ProMaster. The van reviewed by the CNET team costs approximately $39,000. The base model starts at $28,375.

Is it better than its rivals?

If you’re looking to get a vehicle to convert into a camper van, you’ve probably considered the Ford Transit or the Ram ProMaster. But the Mercedes-Benz Metris, an unsuspecting cargo van, is becoming a popular choice nowadays.

Since the Metris is more expensive than other vans in this segment, people often wonder if it’s worth the extra money or not. Looking at what it offers, it seems like a much better deal than its rivals.

The towing and payload capacity alone makes it worth it. You have more than enough to haul a trailer with ATVs, dirt bikes, or even snowmobiles. You can carry all your supplies in the back of the van and you won’t even notice the extra weight when you drive.

The only thing it really lacks is modern technology, but if you own an iPhone or Android device, you should have all you need for music and navigational apps.

Vans have come along way, and they’re only getting better. The Metris offers more than the Transit or the Ram ProMaster do, even though it costs a bit more. But it’s worth it if you need the extra towing abilities.
