It’s been speculated that trucks and SUVs will bring an end to sedans, but many automakers are still hanging in there. There’s still money to be made in the car market, and rather than raising prices, some automakers are building sedans that are cheap, but still offer a lot of features. 

Nissan is one such company that had the cheapest new car in 2019, and seems to have done it again. It has a wide range of vehicles at an affordable price, and they’re not put together with cheap materials that would be better suited for a child’s Barbie car.

MotorTrend has put a list together of the cheapest sedans on the market for 2020. The Nissan Versa is the cheapest of the cheap at $15,655 but still has some awesome features available that you’re going to love. 

What features do you get standard?

You may look at the price and decide it’s not worth checking out, but Nissan managed to cram a lot of technology in, despite the cheap price. For example, Nissan has included a 7-inch touch screen, and three USB ports.

There are many more expensive vehicles that only offer a 5-inch touch screen, and one USB port, so this is a rather pleasant surprise. There are also other standard features like automatic braking with pedestrian detection, high beam assist, and lane departure warning.

Since it costs less than $20,000, you can expect to pay less for car insurance than you would for a more expensive vehicle. For families who need a new vehicle, but have a limited budget, this will go a long way towards helping them get what they want without draining their bank account.

What are the critics saying about the 2020 Nissan Versa?

U.S. News seems to like all the standard features, as well as the attractive interior, but brought the Versa’s score down due to its driving ability. You aren’t going to have a smooth ride with the Versa.

It’s not the same as driving a Wrangler through the woods, but you will feel some bumps as you drive. The acceleration is also poor. According to U.S. News, “It takes a while to get going from a stop, but acceleration smooths out at higher speeds.” 

Car and Driver is thrilled with some of the changes Nissan has made to the Versa and stated,

“The Versa has transformed from unquestionably homely to universally handsome, with details cribbed from the attractive Altima and the spunky, if silly, Kicks crossover, which fills the gap left by the dead-for-2020 Versa Note hatchback.”

Like U.S. News, Car and Driver was frustrated by the fact that the Versa has poor acceleration. If you’re looking for a sedan that has some decent speed, then the Versa might be one you want to pass on.

How does the Nissan Versa compare to other models on the list?

Nissan had another sedan to make the list, which was the Sentra. It has many of the same features as the Versa, but does drive better. It starts at $20,015.

A Volkswagen actually made the list, to many critics’ surprise. It’s the Jetta, and costs a mere $19,815. The Jetta comes with a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. 

If you’re looking for a cheap sedan that can go off-road, the Subaru Impreza made the list. Like all Subarus, it has AWD, but that may be the one good thing that will draw drivers in. Many of the safety features that so many people crave these days is optional, meaning you’ll have to shell out more money to buy them.

As you can see, there are a lot of great options in this segment. However, the Nissan Versa still manages to hold its own against some steep competition.
