Porsche is one of the most popular sports car brands out there. Those who consider themselves Porsche lovers have their favorites, and often it’s the new 911 Carrera. The Porsche 718 Cayman line, unfortunately, doesn’t get too much of the limelight when it comes to sports cars. One Porsche that you don’t hear about too often is the 718 Cayman GT4.

This one isn’t really known as a top-of-the-line sports vehicle, but it is top of the line in the Cayman family. Doug DeMuro jumped at the chance to review the 2020 Cayman GT4, and he loved it. Here are some of his thoughts he shared in his video review. 

How the exterior styling makes it the perfect Porsche 

The new Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 has many exterior features that make it look awesome as a sports car. The front bumper is low but has a bolder design. It also has a larger intake than you might be used to seeing. On the rear of the car, a giant wing adorns the trunk lid. This provides more downforce for ultimate road-grip, making it speedier on the racetrack. 

Rear brake lights look modern, but they have the older two lights on either side of the trunk. To make it more modern, they’ve installed a light bar across the back for appearances only. It’s not wired to function as a light, but it does make it look like the one long light you see on other Porsche models spanning the width of the rear of the car. 

How the interior makes it a perfect choice

Stepping inside the Porsche Cayman GT4, like the one Doug reviewed on camera, you’ll see two sports-style bucket seats. These don’t impress when it comes to comfort, though. Doug mentions that they are uncomfortable and hard to get in and out of, but people like the sporty look to them, spending $6,000 more without batting an eye. 

The center console is another eye-catcher because the buttons it houses are specifically geared toward the sporty performance of the car. You’ll find things like suspension control, stability and traction control, and the on/off sport exhaust button. 

To help keep the weight of the vehicle down, they eliminated some features, like door handles. Instead, they have a fabric-like loop attached to the door to allow you to pull the door shut. The lighter the car is overall, the more gas mileage they can squeeze out of the car. The infotainment system is pretty average, but there are more than enough features on it that you won’t be too disappointed. 

What’s so great about the 2020 Porsche Cayman GT4’s performance?

The Porsche Cayman GT4 has a 4.0-liter flat-six engine running a whopping 414 hp with 309 lb-ft of torque. Mated to it is a six-speed manual transmission. This combination is plenty powerful to produce an acceleration time of 4.2 seconds for a 0 to 60 mph run. 

Brakes are phenomenal with a stopping distance of 148 feet when going from 70 to 0 mph. Carbon-ceramic brakes, like the ones on the model Doug reviewed, are an $8,000 option, and they’re the ones that will get you those braking figures. 

Riding and handling in this Porsche are exceptional. Steering is sharp, taking in curves and turns like they’re nothing. It impressed even Car and Driver because they state that it “reacts to the tinniest finger flex.” 

The Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 may not be the most popular Porsche vehicle on the market, but it’s the perfect size, has the perfect amount of features, and rides perfectly for most sports car enthusiasts.
