The 2020 Ram 1500 Dominates the Ford F-150 in 1 Crucial Area
The battle of big trucks is never-ending. The 2020 Ram 1500 has been trying to work its way into the Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado rivalry but still struggles to be seen as the best truck. However, the Ram 1500 did outrank the 2020 Ford F-150 in one crucial area.
How safe is the 2020 Ram 1500?
According to Motor Trend, the 2020 Ram 1500 is the safest pickup truck that you can buy. It’s safer than midsize and full-size options. However, the 2020 Honda Ridgeline is very close in second place.
The 2020 Ford F-150 made iron the list too, but it’s in last place. Only five trucks made the list, though, so it’s better to be on it. Trucks that failed to make this list include the Toyota Tundra and Chevy Colorado, so that’s embarrassing for them.
How much safer is the Ram 1500?
The 2020 Ram 1500 is pretty advanced compared to rivals when it comes to safety. It’s the first and only full-size pickup truck to earn the Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS).
To earn that title from the IIHS, the vehicle must earn a good rating in all six crashworthiness tests. These tests include the driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength, and head restraint evaluations.
Vehicles also need to earn an advanced or superior rating for available front crash prevention systems for vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to pedestrian evaluations.
Last but not least, good or acceptable headlights are required across all trim levels. The Ram 1500 was able to meet these qualifications, but the 2020 Ford F-150 was not.

The Ram 1500 earned a good score for most of its headlight types. The LED projectors provided excellent visibility around curves and on straightaways without exceeding glare limits. The halogen and LED reflectors provided poor visibility around curves.
The Ford F-150 received a poor rating for its headlights. They provided inadequate visibility around curves, and the low beams created excessive glare. The high-beam assists compensated for some of the F-150’s score limitations.
What safety features come with the Ram 1500?
With the 2020 Ram 1500, you get forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, and lane-keeping assistance. Optional features include adaptive cruise control with stop and go, automatic high beams, a surround-view camera, parking assistance, and rear-cross traffic alert.
Plus, towing is safe. The trailer length indicator automatically scans the length of the trailer and will let you know if it’s safe to change lanes. The 360-degree camera view also provides a complete picture of your surroundings.
The 2020 Ford F-150 comes with tons of safety features too. It comes with standard forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking. Available features include blind-spot monitoring, rear-cross traffic alert, and automatic high beams.
With the Ford Co-Pilot360 bundle, you get adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assistance, and lane-keeping alert. It also has trailer coverage with its blind-spot detection technology.
These trucks are pretty competitive in terms of safety. The Ford F-150 might be considered safer if it didn’t have poor headlight ratings. Perhaps it will be safer after the 2021 models have been tested.
