However, the 2020 Subaru Legacy has recently earned some additional bragging rights with consumers. The 2020 Subaru Legacy is completely redesigned but still delivers on all the best the previous generations had to offer. Consumer Reports recently weighed in on this midsize sedan and others as part of its vehicle ranking for the new year. Citing a host of improvements, a quiet and comfortable ride, along with the high ratings among the consumer surveys, the Subaru Legacy earned an overall score at the top of its class.

The Legacy rated an 89 out of 100 in the CR road test. It also received a four-out-of-five rating in both predicted reliability and customer satisfaction tests, giving it a total score of 87 out of a possible 100. This score beat out the other 10 vehicles in the midsize sedan class.

Also new this year is the Subaru Legacy’s optional 260-hp turbocharged engine and optional 11.6-inch infotainment interface. Not new yet still appreciated, the Legacy comes standard with class-leading, all-wheel-drive capabilities. The sedan could have earned 100 out of 100, but Consumer Reports did find some areas of improvement.

One area consumers and the experts both agree could use some help is the user-friendliness of the Legacy’s infotainment system. Some suggest the interface requires too many steps for basic commands, more specifically, those related to climate control. It was also a mild setback that some of the highly desired driver assistance features like forward-collision warning, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise cost drivers extra.

It gets fluid driving and comfort right

The 2020 Subaru Legacy gets plenty of things right, especially behind the wheel. Experts and consumers alike remark at its smooth and fluid ride, sharing that it likens and even bests the ride of luxury sedans that cost double its MSRP.

The cabin is quiet as the sedan gobbles up turns in a lean and responsive way. Sure, it may not perform as sporty as the Mazda6 or handle quite like the Honda Accord, but it’s more than adequate from the driver’s point of view.

Comfort and convenience go hand-in-hand with the Legacy’s new design this year too. There is plenty of headroom and a well-designed center console that feels like it was meant to fit like a fine leather glove. The roof pillars are slim, making visibility good at almost any angle.

Despite its shortcomings with infotainment commands, the technology is there and learnable. Passengers can be comfortable in seating and with temperature controls. When it comes to cargo, many Legacy owners enjoy the spacious trunk.

The 2020 Subaru Legacy knows a thing or two about capability

In addition to that previously mentioned turbocharged engine, the Subaru Legacy presents other options as well. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine comes standard and offers 28 combined mpg. Considering this car has all-wheel drive, that’s some serious savings at the pump. The continuously variable transmission helps these higher fuel-efficiency ratings and provides smooth shifting upon acceleration.

Consumer Reports and past Subaru Legacy owners have spoken. The 2020 Legacy is everything you’d expect from the Subaru brand and much more. It may fall short in some areas, but there’s plenty to get excited about and tons of things this midsize sedan gets right this year. It’s landed at the top of its class, and it’s worth a look to maybe find its way onto your driveway.
