A midsize hybrid sedan provides both fuel efficiency and a roomy cabin. There are a number of options to pick from these days, including the Toyota Camry Hybrid, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, and the Honda Accord Hybrid. One of these stands out as more expensive for the lower trims than the others, though. Here’s a look at whether the high cost of the 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid is worth it.

The 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid

The 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid may be a very fuel-efficient car, but it doesn’t offer drivers as nice a ride as competitors or provide as large a touchscreen or as much interior space.

The Camry Hybrid is a lot more fuel-efficient than the standard Camry. Compared to the standard Camry’s 29 MPG in the city, 41 MPG on the highway, and 34 MPG combined, the base LE trim of the Camry Hybrid is able to get 51 MPG in the city, 53 MPG on the highway, and 52 MPG combined.

The other two trims of the Camry Hybrid are only slightly less fuel-efficient. The Hybrid SE and XLE trims get 44 MPG city, 47 MPG highway, and 46 MPG combined. That’s especially great when compared to the gas XLE trim, which gets 27 MPG city, 38 MPG highway, and 31 MPG combined.

MotorTrend felt the Camry Hybrid’s handling isn’t as good as that of the Sonata Hybrid or the Accord Hybrid. It isn’t as sporty and has “dull steering.” It can accelerate smoothly and has good brakes, but it isn’t as fun to drive as its competitors. Its engine and electric motor together produce 208 hp.

According to MotorTrend, the top XLE trim of the Camry Hybrid has a “pleasant interior.” It features good quality and nice design, but it “isn’t fancy” or that high-tech. It has a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen. The Camry Hybrid has an average amount of space for rear-seat passengers, with 38 inches of legroom. However, it has less cargo room than competitors, with 15.1 cubic feet.

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has about the same fuel efficiency as the Camry Hybrid and is great to drive. It also offers larger touchscreens but not quite as much space in the rear seat or cargo area.

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid has fuel-efficiency ratings for 50 MPG in the city, 54 MPG on the highway, and 52 MPG combined on the base trim level. Other Sonata Hybrid trims are rated for 45 MPG in the city, 51 MPG on the highway, and 47 MPG combined. The highest-rated gas Sonata gets 28 MPG in the city, 38 MPG on the highway, and 32 MPG combined.

The 2020 Sonata Hybrid offers better handling than the Camry Hybrid, according to MotorTrend. A more engaging drive, the Sonata Hybrid also has a quiet and smooth ride. Together, the engine and motor produce 192 hp.

The Sonata Hybrid’s interior is more high-tech than that of the Camry Hybrid’s. It features either an 8-inch touchscreen or a 10.25-inch touchscreen. The Sonata Hybrid has less rear-seat legroom than its competitors, with 34.8 inches. With 16.0 cubic feet, it does provide more cargo space than the Toyota Camry Hybrid but less than the Accord Hybrid.

The 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid

The 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid isn’t as fuel-efficient as its competitors, but it is great to drive and has the most power of these three options. And, while it may not have as big a touchscreen, it does provide the most space in both the rear seat and the cargo area.

All trim levels of the 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid are rated for 48 MPG in the city, 47 MPG on the highway, and 48 MPG combined. The best-rated gas-powered Accord gets 30 MPG in the city, 38 MPG on the highway, and 33 MPG combined. MotorTrend found the Accord Hybrid to be fun to drive with nice steering, calling it “zippier.” The engine and motor together generate 212 hp.

The Accord Hybrid also has a 7- or 8-inch touchscreen. However, unlike the Camry Hybrid and Sonata Hybrid, its base trim doesn’t offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The Accord Hybrid does provide the most legroom in the rear seats, with 40.4 inches. It also has the most cargo space, with 16.7 cubic feet.

The Toyota Camry Hybrid’s pricing

Of the three hybrids, the Camry Hybrid has the highest base price. The 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid starts at $28,430. Its other two trims start at $30,130 and $32,730. The 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid’s three trims start at $27,750, while the other two start at $29,900 and $35,300. The hybrid powertrain is offered on four of the 2020 Honda Accord’s trims. The price begins at $25,870. The other three trims start at $28,070, $30,570, and $36,400.

The 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid is a very fuel-efficient car. Its fuel efficiency is similar to the 2020 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid’s, though both are better than the 2020 Honda Accord Hybrid’s.

The 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid doesn’t offer as large a touchscreen or have as much cargo space as competitors. However, its main issue is that it isn’t as great to drive as its competitors, especially considering the price tag.
