The 2020 RAV4 is a great compact SUV. It’s versatile, efficient, and reliable. Still, some reviewers think that the RAV4 is overrated. Take Consumer Reports, for example. While CR gave the RAV4 its seal of approval overall, the organization no longer considers it “best-in-class.”

“The original Toyota RAV4 pioneered the small, car-based SUV segment in the mid-1990s, and it has continued to set a high standard for the class with each subsequent generation—until now. Today, the RAV4 is no longer among the best in class in our road tests.”

CR took points away from the 2020 RAV4 because of its engine noise, ride comfort, and interior finishings. The organization thought the Mazda CX-5 was far superior in these areas and named it the top compact SUV of 2020. Other critics like U.S. News currently ranks the Honda CR-V as the best. But recent sales numbers tell a different story.

Buyers still think the RAV4 is the best

Despite a few drawbacks, the RAV4 is the best-selling small SUV, according to GoodCarBadCar. By the end of Q3 2020, Toyota sold 119,214 RAV4 models. That’s only a 3.9% decrease compared to this time last year. Coming in second is the CR-V, with 88,436 units sold. Rounding out the top three is the Chevy Equinox, with 67,475 models sold by the end of Q3.

The ute’s driving dynamics tend toward the mundane side of the spectrum, but most consumers will find the 2020 RAV4’s ride comfortable and its handling agreeable. Adult passengers will be pleased with the generous amount of legroom in the front and rear seats. And cargo room is competitive with the best in the segment.

Why the hype makes sense

Like we mentioned earlier, the RAV4 shines mostly for its versatility. Toyota has made the RAV4 extremely dynamic over the years, so there is almost something for everyone. The regular gas-powered version offers plenty of standard features, including advanced safety equipment and a modern infotainment system. Those who want something more luxury-focused will gravitate toward the Limited trim. And if you’re interested in off-roading, there’s a RAV4 variant for that too. 

Additionally, the RAV4 is one of the best hybrid models of the year. The RAV4 Hybrid is remarkably fuel-efficient and is slightly quicker than the regular version. Toyota also recently launched the all-new RAV4 Prime for those who want a plug-in hybrid option.  

Aside from the first-ever RAV4 Prime model, there aren’t many significant changes for the 2021 RAV4 lineup. That said, if you’ve been eyeing a new RAV4, now might be the right time to buy. A 2020 RAV4 begins at $25,950, and Toyota is offering 0% financing on the vehicle.
