The International Institute for Highway Safety rated the 2020 safest minivans according to the results several different tests. Numerous crash tests are performed. Additionally, LATCH system tests are done and headlight ratings given. Despite the Toyota Sienna’s reputation, it didn’t make it into the top 3––or even 4––rated minivans for 2020 IIHS safety.

The 2020 Chrysler Voyager

In fourth place comes the Chrysler Voyager as one of the safest minivans. Although somewhat in the Pacifica’s shadow, the 2020 Voyager is safer than the Sienna. US News and World Report says the Voyager is “basically a low-budget version of its corporate sibling” the Chrysler Pacifica. We have to say we agree with this verdict.

The Chrysler Voyager starts for $26,985. It features some nice modern amenities such as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Because of the lower starting price point, the 2020 Voyager is missing some of the standard safety features the 2020 Pacifica offers.

However, the IIHS rated the Chrysler Voyager “good” in nearly every area in which it was tested. An “acceptable” for the overlap front: passenger side crash test, and a “poor” for the headlight ratings are where this Chrysler minivan fell short. Overall it is one of the safest 2020 minivans on the market.

The 2020 Kia Sedona

With all the hype surrounding the announcement of the new 2021 Kia Sedona “Grand Utility Vehicle,” more eyes may be turning to the Kia Sedona. And for good reason. The 2020 Sedona is one of the safest minivans on the market today.

Earning many green ‘G’ for “good” squares, the 2020 Sedona saw an ‘A’ for “acceptable” for the same IIHS crash test area as the 2020 Voyager. It also earned a “poor” rating for headlights. Additionally, the Kia Sedona earned an “acceptable” for LATCH ease of use. The Voyager’s LATCH system has yet to be tested. According to US News, the 2020 Sedona starts at $27,600.

The 2020 Chrysler Pacifica

The Chrysler Pacifica, which starts at $35,045, according to US News and World Report. It boasts standard safety tech like blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert. Plus, there are additional available features like navigation.

The IIHS gives the 2020 Pacifica “good” scores in almost every tested area. Following what seems like a minivan trend, it also earned an ‘A’ for “acceptable” in the overlap front: passenger side crash test. It earned “acceptable,” “marginal,”and “poor” ratings for headlights depending on the trim level. As of this writing, the 2020 Pacifica’s LATCH system has not been rated by the IIHS.

The 2020 Honda Odyssey

The the 2020 Odyssey is the winner of the top spot for the safest minivan. In terms of 2020 minivan safety, the Honda Odyssey is the IIHS winner. However, we do see that it earned an ‘A’ for the overlap front: passenger side crash test rating––similarly to its minivan brethren.

the 2020 Odyssey earned a ‘G+’ for its LATCH system, and also sees “acceptable,” “marginal,” and “poor” scores for headlights depending on the trim level. US News rates the Honda Odyssey the best 2020 minivan. The 2020 Odyssey starts at $30,790.

The 2020 Toyota Sienna fell behind

So, the Toyota Sienna didn’t make it into the top four. The 2020 model year for the Toyota minivan is in the #5 spot for overall safety from IIHS. It only beat out the 2020 Dodge Caravan. And, interestingly enough, there is not a 2020 minivan on the market that earned a “top safety pick.” (This is largely due to the headlight ratings, and the fact that the 2020 Odyssey offers different headlights for each trim level).

The Honda Odyssey, Kia Sedona, Chrysler Voyager, and Chrysler Pacifica all beat the Toyota Sienna as the safest 2020 minivans. In order to be a 2020 top safety pick, a given vehicle must earn a “good” in most categories without any headlight ratings falling below “acceptable” across all trim levels. So, if the 2020 Odyssey or the 2020 Pacifica distributed the top trim headlights to all of their models, both would have made it into the 2020 top safety pick category.
