The 2021 Acura TLX made waves in the luxury mid-size sedan segment when it was unveiled a couple of months ago. We got to see its new sleek and curvy design, received information about its new tech-savvy features, and were teased with the return of the Type-S moniker. However, one of the most important parts was left out: the TLX Type-S’ horsepower and torque numbers. This omission left us guessing and wondering what the Type-S will bring to the table when it’s finally launched. But we’re not wondering anymore, as Acura let out the numbers that we have been looking for.

The 2021 Acura TLX Type-S will run with the best in its class

According to a recent release from Acura, the all-new 2021 Acura TLX will produce 355 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque from its turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine. The engine is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and will put the power through all four wheels via the use of the brand’s Super-Handling All-Wheel Drive system. To put this into perspective, the current 3.5-liter V6 engine that is offered on the 2020 TLX produces 290 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque, so the automaker’s decision to go with forced induction was very wise.

In addition to beating out the current TLX model’s power, the 2021 TLX Type-S will make a little more power than the current Audi S4, which produces 349 horsepower, but it comes in a tad bit short in comparison to the BMW M340i, which makes 382 horsepower, as well as the Cadillac CT5-V, which makes 360 horsepower. However, these are just numbers on paper, the real-world performance numbers could tell a different story.

The Acura TLX Type-S will also make an appearance at Pike’s Peak

While the TLX Type-S was the most shocking part of Acura’s news, it did also say that the performance-packed sedan will be serving as the pace car at the 2020 Pike’s Peak International Hill Climb on August 30. According to Acura:

“Racing is a key expression of Acura’s Precision Crafted Performance DNA. For the past nine years, Acura has utilized the grueling Pikes Peak hill climb as an opportunity to grow the skills of the company’s young engineers and as a testbed for future performance technologies in Acura production vehicles. The Acura Pikes Peak race team is comprised of a group of volunteer R&D engineers and is responsible for all aspects of the competition, including the development of vehicles, race prep, crew support and navigating race cars to the finish line.”

In addition to having a 2021 Acura TLX Type-S prototype as the official pace car for the hill climb, Acura also has two entrants in the form of two 2021 Acura TLX 2.0T models that will be piloted by professional drivers Jordan Guitar and Justin Lombard. Considering that the racing runs deep in the brand’s overall heritage, we can’t think of a better way to get the all-new TLX on track to becoming one of the best performers in its class.
